Hey all,Newer amateur welder here.  My neighbor got me 8 sections, 31" long each , 2" round tube x 3/16" wallI'm wondering if anyone has some suggestions for useful shop contraptions to make from this while simultaneously improving my welding skills?I was thinking of trying to weld two tubes in line and then using them the main post of a grinder stand...no other ideas thus far....any suggestions welcome!
Reply:Sounds like legs for a table or cart to me. Maybe a couple of steel saw horses. Weld them together for a stripper pole (Then all you need is a stripper, just what every shop needs!).No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:they definitely sound like legs for somethingimagine a tall 3 legged stool with a 1" thick top... use it for sheet metal work! sandbag and hang your tools off the sideor go for broke and make a stripper pole as mentioned by DSW!
Reply:Use some of it to make a metal rack to put the rest of it on so you might use it later.
Reply:Grinder stands, vise stands,,,,,,,,,,,. 31 inches is about the right height for a lot of things already, or even less once you get a base built. A fun one if you have kids or know someone with kids is a tether ball riser/pipe. I made one for the grand daughter and her friends. I used and big old rim with tire and filled the tire with sand and water. That'll give you a chance to butt weld two (or more) pieces together. Two inch pipe might be a tad bigger than necessary but that's what you've got. Free is in the right price range."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:A poor mans anvil stand. Way less than 31 inches of pipe. All scrap so you kinda have to design on the fly. Your buddy should be able to snag a break drum. This one was headed for the scrap yard when I snagged it. Don't forget some isolation (rubber) washers between sections somehwere in the stand or it'll ring & sing so loud your eyes will go crossed. Reply:you said amateur, but you didn't whether you're a beginner or not, so i'll go out on a ledge here, hope you dont take offense.round tubes didn't get to be a lot of fun til i got some hole saws to notch them, and a bender to bend them.  For a beginner welder, 3/16" walled stuff is pretty expensive material to use to practice welding on. But you got them for free, or relatively cheap, cut one of the tubes up, and weld it back up.  Use it to improve your skills.

Reply:got some more scrap from the neighbor....2" wide 3/8 thick flat stock....Now I have idea for this and the tube....Brush guard for my Subaru!  The guard wont be too hard as i envision it....the support bracket and frame tie in might be a little more iffy but I'm sure I can make it work.  I think I'm going to be needing a hole saw to notch the flat stockthe guard will be made as follows.  2 horizontal sections of the round tube.  Capped on the ends by the flat stock that will connect the two.  maybe make the top a wee bit shorter and cut at an angle so it angles up on the sides...will have to see where on the front cross member is the best place  to tie in....
