Over the weekend, I ripped of one of my shock mounts off the jeep while 4 wheeling.  Im going to weld it back on tonight.  The last time I welded them on, I used 6011 3/32 rod.  It held up great.  I now have a miller 210 mig machine and Id like to use that.  But I may only be able to use the mig on one side of the bracket.  The other side maybe too tight of a fit for the mig gun(due to the control arm bracket), so I may need the stick.  The shock bracket is 3/16" thick...maybe 1/4"  Ill have to check.  Im not sure about the dana 44 axle tube.    I have 3/32 6011 rod and I have 1/8 6013.  Ill have to do this upside (laying on the floor looking up at the axle tube) and vertical around the tube- yea.  Which rod would you recommend and what amp setting on the lincoln 225ac?For the mig, I have .35 wire and I think the chart suggests level 4 and 48 on the wire speed for 1/4 inch.  Im guessing I should reduce the speed by about 20%, what about the heat/amps level?Any help and any recommended weld methods would be great.  I was just going to do V's or C's spending more time on the axle tube than the bracket. Thanks in advanceMiller 210Lincoln AC225-sHypertherm Powermax 600
Reply:Use the MIG, if you have to weld the other side with stick, that would be fine.  I would start with the 1/4" settings.  If its too hot, turn down to the next recommended setting for the next thinner plate.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Always use 7018 on suspension/frame type stuff. It will take stuff that breaks the 6010/6011. It's a thing called an elasticity coefficient. What it amounts to is how far it will stretch before it breaks. 6010/6011 doesn't have much and is very susceptible to vibration and shock (as in impact). Mig with the proper wire holds up well to this type of loading. If you have to put it back on it didn't hold up, lol.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. Reply:Haha, Yea, I stick welded them on and put them up a little to high on the axle.  Didnt leave me with any good shock options.  I wheeled with them once and they held up fine but I didnt like the shorter travel shocks.  So, I cut them off and a buddy of mine tig welded them on; however, he had a really hard time getting the heat on the bracket.  There wasnt a lot of penetration on the bracket.   Anyway, thanks for the advice.  I was able to get the mig gun in there.  Here are some pictures.  Not the prettiest welds but I gave it the BFH test and it didnt move.  I had to hit both ends after I ran the main bead.  Because I didnt start at the end and ended a litle soon.  Plus the ends had small gap in the bracket. The other side:Pictures from the trail when it broke:This is one of the trails we were on...big rocks can break stuff.Miller 210Lincoln AC225-sHypertherm Powermax 600
Reply:No,no,no you are doing it all wrong. Pick me up to go 'wheeling, I will help you out.Seriously, looks OK, for the tight fit,may break again in the future, may need some bracing.Looks like alot of fun tho. Is the same rock that took out the spring also broke the shock mount?Last edited by tnjind; 07-21-2008 at 10:24 PM.Reason: added stuffTim Beeker.
Reply:Looks like you got it.  Looks like enough heat and enough metal.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks guys.  Tim, I think the spring popped out first...over flexed maybe?  That happens sometimes.  Jeeps dont have spring retainers except for the front driver side.  Some guys will run a limit strap if it happens a lot.  That is the first time it happened to me in over a year.  Then, I think the shock may have hit hard at the bottom (collapsed) because I may need just a tad more of a bump stop and that may have caused the mount to break.Hey, if you want drive to Central PA you can have a right seat.  Im hoping by next trip Ill have the weld/alternator installed.  Just having a hard time finding a good spot to mount it in the engine bay.  So if you can stick weld.....Miller 210Lincoln AC225-sHypertherm Powermax 600

Reply:Hey only one year to respond.  I guess I missed this last msg.  No, not a dana 35.  Dana 44, ARB's front and rear.  Although, I think back then I was still running a dana 30 with ARB up front.  Held up well with the 35's actually.  I did swap it out for a 3/4 ton dana 44 cut down to 64" wms to wms.Miller 210Lincoln AC225-sHypertherm Powermax 600
