I figured since I was there I would post pictures of these welds on the arch. I realize they were done from '63 to '65 but I figured they'd still look a little better than this. Guess they are pretty good seein as how they're pushin 50 years Attached ImagesLast edited by Gump; 07-23-2012 at 11:33 PM.Safety 3rdGump
Reply:It's not like the stainless facade is going to fall off if the welds aren't pretty and X-ray quality...Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:There's quite a long account of the arch here, including construction details. It was designed by Eero Saarinen, a Finnish-American architect who designed the United Nations building in New York, Dulles International Airport near Washington, D. C., the General Motors Technical Center near Detroit, and the TWA terminal at New Yorks John F. Kennedy Airport.http://www.interestingamerica.com/20...igonis_41.html"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:When I visited the Arch back in the '90's I took a similar look at it. I was most impressed by how smooth the transitions are between the stainless panels. It truly is a top level feat of engineering. I wonder what type(s) of welder(s) they used...anyone know ?
