When I moved into my new home, the one thing that I wanted to complete first was my backyard gate that goes into the alley. I hated it. Dam thing was falling apart. Here is before and after pics. Used 2 inch square tubing for the door and the post are 3x5 inch rectangular tubing. Attached Images

Reply:I had also poured a small slab of concrete for a stepping stone. Had painted the gate with rustoleum paint. The reason the post are higher than the wall is because I plan on finishing the wall in the near future and will match up with the top of the post. Hope yall like the pics

Reply:Looks good!My only question is, isnt that one hinge in the picture upside down?  Whenever I have used those hinges I always place them both with the shoulder on the bottom to split the load.  Or did you do that for security reasons so that the gate can not be lifted off the hinges?

Reply:MNWelder, that's a very heavy duty gate!  No one will be coming through that one!  It will look nice once the block wall is completed to match the gate height.  I like the sheetmetal idea to keep anyone from easily climbing the gate and providing some privacy without using wood.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Originally Posted by nmwelderThere's quite a few houses in this town with the meters in the alleyway. My parents live out in the country and its in the front of there fence.oh and by the way the hinge part on the rectangular tubing I had made my self because the other half of the hinge wouldnt fit over the rectangular tubing so I had to do some modifying. Found it at our local " Lowes " ( Not really lowes, but a wannabe) The hinge was originally for a heavy duty fence gate. ( The flemsy fences ) But it works awesome and fine with me.
Reply:Looks good and beefy.   As for the gas meter thing, that all depends on where you live.  Here, our meters are inside in the basement for the most part or right up against the house outside.  They have it set up so all they ahve to do is drive down the street and scan the meters to read it.  No access is needed. What I like about it is, besides the no access needed part is they are responsible for everything from the street to the meter if it ever needs repair, I am responsible for everything after the meter.Come try it out and stay a while.
