In this thread I will be posting pictures of some welds I have done in my welding classes. I would appreciate any feedback whether good or bad, give me some tips and tell me how i could do better, and also share your techniques if you wouldn't mind.
Reply:Part 1. Oxy-acetylene welding. this is my first lap joint tell me if its an alright weld lol.will be updating tomorrow with a couple more welds, butt, outside corner, T, etc.
Reply:Just a suggestion, but I would turn on the 'Macro Function' of your Camera / Phone (some phones don't have this option..) so that these guys can get a better look at your welds. Reply:yea let me see if i can find some batteries for my camera. those were from my phone.
Reply:better pictures?
Reply:looks a little cold, try running a bit slower or with a little more heat.Miller Dynasty 300 DXMiller CST280Miller Maxstar 150 STH
Reply:Looking at the material thickness, the weld size, and the severe heat scaling extending far from the weld, I will say that you are dumping too much heat into the material. This weld is huge compared to the sheet thickness.  If the weld consumes the upper edge of the joint, and extends the same distance along the base leg, the weld width would only be about 1-1/2 X the sheet thickness.  A lap weld, as with a fillet weld, only requires fusion to both legs of the joint, all the way into the root, it does not have to penetrate any more than this into the plate, or melt any wider than that.I would look at producing a smaller weld puddle and moving along at a faster rate.  The puddle should just consume the upper sheet edge, the root of the joint, and fuse to the base sheet.  This weld can be made to resemble a precision TIG weld.  Use a well focused flame with enough heat, focus the tip of the inner cone on the root of the joint, do not weave or manipulate the torch in any pattern, simply maintain this torch location as you carry the puddle straight down the length of the joint.  This can be done without filler, using the top edge of the lap as filler, or if wire is added, use a small size similar to the sheet thickness, and quickly dab in additons of filler at a regular interval.Make this look like a TIG weld, and you'll be ready to TIG weld.Last edited by pulser; 10-26-2010 at 01:50 PM.
Reply:heres a few more from today. guys take into consideration this is my first time welding anything.
Reply:i know that there is some under cut. im still tinkering and holding the torch in different angles and using different sized rods and what not. also still trying to get the oxy and acetylene pressure in the sweet spot. its hard to tell since we have a manifold system. the acetylene regulator is easier to read but the oxygen isnt as exact, the incraments are a lot more spaced out.
