Hey everyone, New to this forum. I am also new to welding, taking a course at school. I liked it so much I got myself a millermatic 140 mig welder. I also like video editing, and I made this video about how to make a welding work bench. Check it out and let me know what you think! This is my first scratchbuilt welding project, so take er easy! Thanks!Tim
Reply:Nice job kid and good work on the video. It warm's my old heart to see a young man wanting to learn something productive instead of playing video games all day long. Keep up the good work.
Reply:Good work, but to be completely honest, it's really strange seeing you pop up like that.
Reply:That's awesome.  I only wish I had a MIG when I was your age.  Imagine where I would be now.  You have a 15 year headstart on me.ars sine scientia nihil est
Reply:Nice job son.  Didn't need all the unrelated stuff, but Hey!  It's your video...(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah:  Go Big Red!   (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)
Reply:Thanks for the responses everyone! I love welding, and even though I am not that good at it yet I have been practicing a lot. I am taking a course a High School where we are learning to gas, mig and stick weld, as well as learning to use oxy-acetelyne torches. It is a great experience and I am very thankful for the opportunity to do this. The real question I would like an answer to with this video is, if I were to remove all the unrelated stuff and perhaps go easy on the green screening, do you think videos of this style showing how to do various welding projects could become popular in the welding community? The reason I want to have a series of popular videos on the internet is that when enough people become interested in your videos you can begin to make money through youtube advertising. I am looking for a way to do more meaningful work than my current part time restaurant job.
Reply:It's great that you want to make a difference through educational videos on the internet... but I have to warn you, revenue through youtube videos isn't enough to replace a job unless you are one of the big shots. Most people who make money through youtube make money by selling tshirts or iTunes music store songs. There are other ways to make a difference, and make money at the same time.I'm not trying to be a nay sayer (even though I am), it's just that if you want to make it big, you have to set your sights high. Very high.
Reply:I realize that going directly through youtube to make money is difficult, however if I can get enough youtube viewers I will affiliate with other companies and advertise their stuff (by advertise I mean mention, not to the point where it takes away from the video) both on my videos and website. Maybe I could do things like sell plans for cool projects, or extra videos or whatever. I figure I might as well do this while I am a student, and more important than making stacks of money is to enjoy life as a student. (Although making enough money to sustain my welding addiction would be nice)
Reply:Nice job Tim! I would watch more welding videos from you. I get the opening credit/teaser type stuff. As long as it's kept brief I would think it may attract people to check out your other videos... The RC stuff got me to check out the channel. I got side tracked by the motorized bike lol. But I'll be back to check out the planes...
Reply:http://www.rcexperimental.com/index.html The way you write and your interest in Photography... I would suggest contacting magazine Editors. Great job!Anyhoo....Unless you have a Camera Operator it will be difficult to make a decent "How To Video".Without some type of camera movement the Videos become very stagnant. Although with your RC knowledge you could probably make Motorized camera dolly. A simple move like a Dolly movement right or left while the Camera pans right or left adds a lot of Dynamics to the shot. Even hand held shots are better than the Camera POV remaining in one spot but you need to make yerelf a little Steadicam otherwise you end up with wau too much Camera shake. The Green Screen stuff is tricky- you can  make it part of your "Style" and make the use of your Pop Ups comedic relief for what is usually a boring Technical Video.Pop Up and talk about SafetyPop Up and Talk about the CostsPop Up and mention Links to suppliers- just enough time to break up the Video or not use it and go for a straight Video. If you are just a One Man show and no one around to help, you really need to Storyboard the Video- need to do that anyway- that is the #1 mistake for new Film Makers. They'll just go out and shoot a lot of footage and then spend half a decade wading through the footage in the editing roomLose the background Music while shooting the Video- add music in Post( You need to watch the music in the background in all the Videos anyway because you  likely don't have the Rights to use the Music in your Video)Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Thanks for the positive comments, suggestions and constructive criticism. I will definitely be doing more welding videos, taking into account the suggestions you guys made. Make sure you subscribe to my youtube so you will know when I make a new welding video! Also, I will try to post any new videos to the forum here. Thanks!Tim
Reply:yeah the music was distractingly bad.. what were the lyrics  "ya ya ya ya ya" over and over again??I also agree on the shorter intro stuff. Would be good for RC video channel, but if you want to do welding ones, maybe a different welding into montage would be appropriate.I would have appreciated seeing some more close ups of the welds as well.  Go for it with youtube.  You wont make much money right away, but over time you can make some long tail... and it might be enough to pay for your welding tools and materials as a hobby / or training for a career.
