I got a free axle and tongue from an air compressor. So i decided to finally put it to use.It will be 44" wide x 96" long. Frame is 2"x2"x3/16" angle.I will take suggestions as to the best way to attach the axle to the frame. I was planning on just welding the crap out of it."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:I will also take suggestions on mounting the tongue. You can see what I have in mind."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:RE: Axle mounting, avoid welding torsion axles to the frame. Weld on a set of heavy angle brackets with matching holes so that the axle can be bolted in place.City of L.A. Reply:I've got a similar axle and angle iron laying in the garage.  I was planning on bolting the axle to the angle and then using some 11 ga inner fenders to distribute the the load a bit.  Kinda sux it's just shy of 4' wide.My name's not Jim....
Reply:We would use a pair of large grade 8 bolts, per side, through brackets welded to the frame. It makes replacement sooooooo much easier when the axle fails, which they can, and do.  I would use the round holes primarily, but the slots are perfectly acceptable also. The weld-on brackets are usually 3/16" thick or better, and have a large slot for the axle to pass through. I might be able to hunt down a picture of one. Here is a PDF with an overview of a typical torsion setup.http://dexteraxle.com/i/u/1080235/f/...nformation.pdf Attached ImagesLast edited by tanglediver; 10-08-2010 at 11:42 PM.City of L.A. Reply:If replacement is the only reason for bolting instead of welding, I will weld. If this axle fails, I will not buy another this narrow. I just got it for free and figured it was worth buying some steel. If I had to buy an axle I would build another trailer at LEAST 4' wide."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Also, I am putting 2"sq. 1/8" tubing for a side and front rail."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Seems like that mounting bracket is fairly long. Maybe 18 inches at least?  Stretches the load out farther along the frame. It gets sticthed to the frame."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Like tanglediver said, it has notch cut out about the size of the tubing, mutliple holes to bolt the axle to, about 18" to 24" inches long, maybe even longer.  The mount gets stitch welded to the frame, the axle gets bolted to the mount. Even has a bolting arrangement to allow for racking of the axle for ravel adjustment.Kinda tuff to see here. A guy could fab on up easy enough. I modified this one to raise the trailer for as a deck over.

Reply:Did you ever finish the trailer stickman???
Reply:OK, all I have left is the electricalicity and some stake pockets. Unfortunately, I lost ALL of my pics form my jump stick drive.  Last GOOD backup was in March. So all of the progress pics and all other projects I posted ARE GONE!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Not bad at all. Great little handy trailer.
Reply:Why did you use plywood and how does your tail gate work?  Your pics finally motivated me to use up my axle.  I put it together pretty quick.  Just needs fenders and lights.  Is it alright to post a pic or two here, or you want me to dump them in my own thread?  Figured I'd ask...My name's not Jim....

Reply:Just looked at my pics, guess I forgot to turn off the macro.  They are all blurry.  Will get some new pics tomorrow.  Our base frames are almost identical.  I ended up with 45" wide by about 6' 6" long using scrap angle that I had been tripping over.  I used mesh for the floor, 2" by 3" 11ga for the tongue, and 1 1/2" by 3/16" angle for the top rail.  Mine looks an awful lot like the store bought ones, but I used thicker material all over and it doesn't twist like the store bought trailers do.  The mesh was actually cheaper than the plywood I priced.  3/4" #9 raised expanded was like $35 for a 4x8 sheet.  I only used half of it cuz I had a remnant from a previous project. Now I have a bigger remnant for the next one. My name's not Jim....
Reply:I never priced expanded steel. But I wanted to use it to haul pea gravel, for example, when the dog runs need filling. Between my family members we have seven dogs. Not enough needed to use the semi dump truck, so I will use this. I am actually selling a 6 1/2 or 7 x 12 store bought trailer now that I have this one. Because you guessed it, FLIMSY! Man, what a piece of ****. Also I have small equipment trailer which is a Cronkhite 15kgvw, and it is built STOUT. So I won't need that crappy one anyway."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Nice little trailer Stick-man!I need to build a small one, they sure are handy when you don't need to haul anything big, maybe I'll get to it next spring.I just finished building a big one, finished it Thursday.I had a bunch of used steel, good pieces from some industrial shelving frames and other odds and ends, put it with some new stock so I could get that old stuff used up, built it in my driveway outside, had to put my tools up at the end of everyday so I can attest that its a pain in the ace!I don't want to hijack your thread, and I don't post much of my work on here anymore because of certain jokers that like to start crap with you just for the fun of it, but if you want a look, heres a link to another site I posted the build on!Boostin, it will be interesting to see what you come up with too!Heres the link:http://www.weekendfreedommachines.co...918/94703.html#1. Reply:I built an 18 foot tandem flatdeck trailer when I was 17yrs old , something every 17 year old kid needs! After 37 years of hard use it was semi-retired last year to be used off-road around the farm only. The deck is in rough shape and the tires (2nd or third set?) are worn out plus the brakes need a reline.  I'm hoping I don't need a big flatdeck trailer like this anymore, we'll see.I think a trailer about the size of  Stick-man's is what is needed next, they are a very handy unit, especially if your pickup truck has a canopy fitted like mine does.I've also looked at the store bought (Home Depot) units and thought they were flimsy.Last edited by worntorn; 10-31-2010 at 12:03 PM.

Reply:Stickman:I love your little trailer. Nice work. I can see lots of uses for something like that.Only concern I have with it though is I think that pintel hitch might be a little light for the job of pulling.......I'm going to look around for an axle now and throw together something like it.Keep the pix's coming.Glenn.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...I gave up driving truck after 23 years of it a couple of years ago, but a few years back I was basically dedicated and driving into Chicago every day, hated every minute of the drive, but loved the money I made, I could never see how anyone could live in a big city like Chicago, or any city for that matter, give me the open country side any day.If you do decide to move to Indiana, we could always use an extra weldor or two around our area, or at least around the Fort Wayne area, there are plenty of empty buildings around right now, what with the economy, and all the places that have went out of business, big machines and tools are cheap right now too!#1. Reply:OK, OK, Stampeder and worntorn, I know it's a little hefty, but like I said, it was $Free.99. And any wider of a trailer, you would need a wider tongue. I was gonna save it but then I thought of it sittin for twenty years........ and said NO, I am just gonna use it and get it over with! But thanks for all the comps.Oh, and you could never imagine how much i like putting things to the test. Trust me, that trailer WILL haul some pretty big loads in its upcoming life!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!!
