pulled a 72' SA-200 off a farm for dirt cheap,  started un-doing all the nonsense, rebuilding the battery box, exhaust, welding in sheet metal where it was rotten.  Beautiful machine, runs and welds like a dream. Ill post more when its done. Attached Images

Reply:If I recall correctly, 1970, 71, 72, and the first half of 73 were round barrel, (all copper), with a black face plate. Why Lincoln did this I have no idea. Reply:well, I was under the impression that 72 was the year they switched to a black face, about mid way through.... even though they still had copper inside.. so I just figured it would be no big inaccuracy. But I could be wrong...  I guess I could just try to salvage the back plate thats on it, but its all bent up in one corner.
Reply:Seems as I read 1969 or maybe 1969.5 was the last year for the Red Face, call Stumpfs they'll know. You can buy replacement face plates from them, and they will stamp the serial and code numbers on it for you.  http://www.stumpfweldingsupplies.com...ameplates.htmlDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:a fresh coat of paint, a removal of a birds nest from the generator, and a bunch of other nonsense gets us to this point. You all talked me into keeping my faceplate just the way it is. Alittle seafoam and a fresh tank of gas and it starts faster than my trailblazer and welds  like a dream. Now all thats left is the trailer hitch and axle... Also a shot of my goofy torch cart. Reply:Yup, looks good and I don't see any goofy torch cart.Actually, the spin-on is fine that way as it drains back to the base and as such empties out rather quickly after shutdown.  Typical installation for a spin-on with that type head.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:There was a discussion on one of these boards where the filter worked fine for some this way, but others reported the filter never filled with oil. Seems to me if nothing else, if the oil didn't all drain back into the pan, you'd get oil all over when changing.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Understood. My old Kohler 6.5 generator (Kohler 4cyl L-head) has the same type by-pass filter mounted the way citizen smith's is and after a few minutes from shuting down the filter can be spun off without spewing oil all over.Typical on Millers too.  Big 20 parts unit in the yard.Don't know how well the retrofit filter head type such as those that Bill's and others sell drain out upside down though. Reply:well, to be honest, I havent even gotten to the oil system yet. I have alittle wheeper in one of the flare fittings. Id like to swap the tube out for maybe SS hose or something like CEP has above. Also, My gauge cluster in front needs some attention. Namely the amperage gauge needs to be hooked up. Im not sure how the person before had it wired. And then the Oil temp is completely  smashed in so I cut the probe right behind the gauge for now.... Truthfully I like those gauges on the engine but for some reason they put them all up front. Oh well.Since I dont have any experience with these machines, did they have a manual Idle control on these things? I have the Vacuum idler still functional on the machine, and someone at some point did some modifications and put a push arm from the front panel to the back of linkage of the idler so you could push the idle up. But if you let go- it just idles down again. Theres also a mysterious unwired extra toggle switch on the front, so Im wondering if someone had this thing set up differently at one point. Now, I know, everyone is going to suggest I just upgrade the idler anyways and then I can switch it up and down all day, but I was just wondering if there was something done to these old ones.
Reply:Napa can set you up with any gauges you'll need. There is a grind ez option you can get from Shirley Cable.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Little late now, but you could have filled in all the holes in the front, and made a control panel like I did for my 1948 under the left side door. Reply:Nice restore. I had a 72 sa200 as well. I sold it because didn't see the need in 3 welding machines. I sure do miss the old girl. Had a superb buttery arc. Its nice to see another one being brought back to her original glory. Looks good
Reply:Ok, so the alternator on my machine is bad, who has some recommendations? The mounting bracket off of weldmart is more expensive than the alt itself.  What type of alts are you guys putting in? has anyone made their own mounting brackets?
Reply:Goggle, Bills welder repair they should be able to help you out. You will have to come up with the arm that adjusts tension and locks the alt.in place. Can find those arms at the forklift dealers/ repair people or just fab one up."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Yeah, I think I can probably fab the brackets the more I look at them.  Bill's sells an AC Delco alt for 115$ which seems a bit high. The local napa was quoting me mid 70s with core.
Reply:I have used the 3 wire GM altnernators with good success. They are every where, easy to find when you need another 1 and can be had from 30-75 dollars anywhere. I have a link on it but can't find it just now. I think if you punch in 3 wire alternator VS. 1 Wire you will find the info to hook it up. You can hook the exciter wire to the battery but need a way of interrupting it when the unit is off or you will drain down your battery. Through the oil pressure switch seems to work Duane , or Denrep could probably spell it out better. I also think Bill's may have the diagram posted on the site. The 1 wire is very simple, but the 3 wire is more affordable and better if you ever wanted to hook up accessories like a light or inverter later on. Good Luck. I'll see if I can find or just sketch you a diagram."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Ok I think I found it but I'm not sure how to post a link. These guys make harnesses and kits for car electrical but if you have ever considered and alternator conversion this site has great information on what to use, what to look out for and what not to use. http://madelectrical.com/ well, my first link and I think it actually works, go to electrical tech and read the sub chapters, good stuff. Hope it helps.Last edited by kolot; 11-03-2010 at 04:55 PM."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:the link works but the site doesnt.. I pulled the regulator off and opened it up today and everything looked in working order. So Im going to assume that theres a fault in the diode. maybe it melted in the heat sink sometime in the past 38 years. Looks like I better set aside some flatstock for making new brackets....
