have you ever tried an automatic slag remover (pneumatic or electric) ?for example http://toolmonger.com/wp-content/upl...dle-scaler.jpgdoes it work perfectly on 7018 and 6010 slag?
Reply:That is referred to as a needle scaler.  There is also a pneumatic chisel-type scaler that also works well.  I have used both and they both remove slag very well.  The only problem is that they will mark up the surface of your weld so they are good for fill passes, but not for the cover pass if you are doing a groove weld or a multi-pass fillet weld.
Reply:I agree,  I just got the $40 needle scaler from harbor freight and its awesome for cleaning up 6011 welds that you are going to go over with 7018.  Takes a couple seconds instead of beating on it all day with a slag hammer. And yes it marks them up a lot but thats ok.Miller Synchro250 bought new 1997Millermatic200Miller Bluestar 2E . AC/DC 16hpBluestar 2E , DC Miller Thunderbolt225 AC/DC ArcLongevity 60 plasma
Reply:I like to beat the daylights outta it with a chipping hammerI think a scaler would be nice for hard to reach places where you can't swing the hammer.  And it probably does a better job overall.I wonder what they did before they had these things"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:how bad are the welds, post some pics? Lo Hi should just pop off if decent weldment. If the welds are that difficult to chip, maybe you need a grinder instead. Hard to answer with out seeing the situation or better explanation. Is there a lot of under cut, puddle deformation? goose poop?Lincoln Ranger 8                        Lincoln 175                          Drill pressLincoln 225 mig                            Plasma                              8 ft brake        52" jump shear

Reply:If you get an electric one you'll have worse than tennis elbow. http://www.nittokohki.com/tools/prod...s/ejc-32a.html
Reply:Needle scalers serve a purpose, but you have to ask yourself, do i really need one for this job. When welding 6010,or 6011 the slag will be a little harder to remove especially if the material is dirty.  But when welding with 7018 depending on  your abilities the slag should basically remove itself if welded properly then should just be wire brushed. Also it never hurts to hit a multi pass weld with a grinder to remove surface impurities and even out your weld profile. hope this helps!"My fingernails are melting"

Reply:Cheap cup brushes are just that. When you get tired of little pieces of wire getting embedded in your legs, arms, torso, THE DOG...........  Or going thru a tool a day, then move on to American made high dollar cup brushes.  Maybe 25 dollars.I do a fair amount of work.  I don't do it for a living, but I do a fair amount of work. This baby is about 2yrs old.  It's used to clean slag and rust prior to painting.  If it isn't gonna be painted, it's just the chipping hammer and a manual wire brush.  But it is used a LOT.I spend the money on a good cup brush, then I mount it on a cheap import grinder.  I won't mount them on a good DeWalt.  They're, by nature, out of balance, and tear up bearings in the grinder head.  A cutting/grinding wheel is very well balanced, and a much lower mass. The little red cup brushes fall apart in a day.I can get the name of the company on Monday if anybody's interested.
