A guy droped off a 2002 1 ton chevy dualy truck and wants me to put a dump flat bed on it. I am sort of lost right now because of the gas tank and the frame cross supports. Just wondering if anyone has done a "from scratch dump flatbed" on a newer chevy one ton.
Reply:i havn't done one, nor have i ever even seen one, but if there is a clearance issue, why not build up the frame so that everything clears the obstructions? the bed may be a little higher than the client wants, but if he wants it flat, he's gonna have to deal with it. the only other ways to take care of obstructions are to either move/remove the obstruction (not a good idea with the gas tank), or else notch/modify the flat bed, in which case it won;t be too flat.hope that helps. i think more people would be able to help if there were some pictures?Later,Andy
Reply:I done several dump beds at the place I used to work but not on a newer chevy.  If you notched the frame on the bed and supported around the notch that would give you a few more inches.  How much does it like fitting?  Some pics might help.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Flat beds and fuel filler necks never jive. You have to notch the bed to accept the filler or raise the bed usually. I think the best answer is a well designed notch. Lower decks are better. Lower CG and easier for old guys to lift to. I'm not an old guy yet, but I'm planning for it.
Reply:I haven't looked all that closely at the Chevys. The Fords I've seen have a bracket mounted to the framerails that sits under the bed. Due to the low fill height I've seen a number to dumps that are a B***h to fill, want to spit fuel as they try to get air out of the tank as you fill. Cheat, swing by a dealership and stick your nose under a bed. Tell em your shopping. We lucked out, when we built our non dump flat bed we went over to a shop in our area that installs bodies, readings I believe. Walked in and talked to one of the installers in the shop, didn't ask at the desk just, wandered around to the shop and saw the guys that do the real work. He was great! Once he understood what we wanted, he not only gave us some ideas, but also could tell us the part numbers for the hoses, fill plate, vent lines etc. that they stocked so we could order them from up front. Stopped by later and gave him and his guys a case of cold ones for all the help.
Reply:I'm not familiar with the frame your trying to put a flat bed on. But for what it's worth, when I did that we started with usually a 2x4 piece of wood and layed it flat on top of the frame and then put c-channel on it's edge over it. Also for attaching the c-channel to the frame we used 3/8" x 4" x 12" welded on the c-channnel and bolted to the frame. And then ran more c-channel at a 90 degrees across the top of the other c-channel.

Reply:Hey Ag Specialties,I've built a few. None on that chassis, but I have a good  idea of what you're up against. First thing you need are the customer's specific wants. Then you will have to establish the bodies length and hinge location; next hoist location, geometry and clearance. Most everything else can be worked around from there. You'll definitely want to plan this out carefully. Here's a few things that come to mind:Scissors hoist or direct acting cylinders? If direct lift cylinders, inside or outside of the rails?Subframe?Dump angle desired.Expected dump load.Body overhang.Ground clearance with body raised.Hoist clearance during cycle.Towing hitch?Tire clearance with suspension  at maximum bottom and twist.Cross members pierce or saddle the body rails?Hydraulic reservoir location.Pump drive method.Good Luck with it.Last edited by denrep; 02-19-2008 at 09:03 PM.
Reply:All I know, is adding chevy truck beds would be good in loading cargos and other stuff when you need to move to some far place. I'm also not familiar on how to make the dump flat bed.
Reply:Gas or diesel?    diesels are much easier due to no emmisions crap stuck on top of the fuel tank.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I dont know if this is much help or not, but I have seen one around town before.  From what I remember the lift cylinder or scissor was mounter in the bed near the cab dead center.  This portion of  the bed was not actually flat looked almost like part of a transmission housing that contained all the goodies underneath.
