Im cutting 16ga and dont have a plasma. I have a tips from 000, 00, and 0 sizes which would work the best? I tried the 000 but it was so narrow of a cut it kept melting back together. the torch is a victor 1-101 series
Reply:What are your gas settings? Usually melting back together means you are too hot and need to back off on the acet or the O2 is too low or not adjusted properly. O2 valve at the handle needs to be wide open and then adjusted at the torch head.Picts would also help.
Reply:didnt have the cam with me. handle was wide open on oxy, running 8psi and if I remember right 35psi
Reply:Acet sounds high. I want to say I usually run 3-4 acet and about 40 on the O2 for almost everything. Also be sure the tip is clean and not clogged. I can cut almost anything with the current tip in the torch, (I forget exactly which one it is now) part of it is also moving at the right speed. Move too slow and even at the correct settings things will melt back together.
Reply:Angle the torch alsoI think this was 20g, may have been 16g. The Mrs. workin' on her "Art"Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Is she pushing the torch? Guess when I think about it, I rock the torch to me sometimes when I cut so it would be similar, though I usually tip it away and cut towards me.Nice flower BTW. Almost looks like one of those propane heater grills in the center. That would make a neat project.
Reply:I always angle it and the tip is new. ill try lower act. thanks.
Reply:The #000 is the right tip with the following pressures OX 20-25psi and acetylene 3-5 psi. (from Victor Tip Chart)The #000 will cut up to 1/8" plate at these setting at 20-30 in per minute. Using the minimum pressures of 3 and 20 will help, but you will still have to move fast to get a clean cut with no weld back.OAdoctorwww.regulatortorchrepair.com
Reply:without pics I will say speed up. Alot of times melting back together is caused by two slow a travel speed. I would use the #000 tip and lay the torch over once the cut starts move as fast as you can and keep the cut going.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:I've said this before and I'll say it one more time. The valves on your torch are pressure regulating devices as long as the flow downstream of the valves is unrestricted. That works for anything in any system. water, oil, or gas. The trick is setting the pre-heat flame for the thickness of metal you are attempting to cut. I use 10# acetylene and 40# oxygen at the regulators for everything up thru 1/2 'and set the length of the pre-heat flame with the valves. I feather the handle for the cutting oxygen to the amount I need for the thickness of metal I'm cutting. The thinner the metal, the flatter the angle of your cutting tip should be to your metal. On 12 guage and thinner my torch is nearly flat, only about 10 to 15 degrees and I carry the cut 2" to 4" in front of the tip. Anything thinner I use a jigsaw as it's easier and there is no warping. I have no use for a 000 tip. I can do a smoother, cleaner cut with a 00.I know that others will disagree, they have before, but this works. Don't believe me? Come on down and I'll show you. For free.
Reply:I tried 5psi acetylene but still 35psi oxy and it did a little better but still wasn't great. I had the torch about 45* forgot to take pic again. I tried going fast all the way to the point it was only gouging about 1/2 way through.Im starting to think I have a problem with my torch though, every now and then i would hit the cut lever and it would barely work. just started doing that.
Reply:Biggest mistakes people make:Too much heat.Dirty tip.Wrong tip.Remember, cutting correctly, you are NOT NOT NOT,,,,, melting, and then blowing away the molten metal. You are simply getting a small bit of it, red-hot,,,, then (assuming a clean tip) directing a very focused stream of pure oxygen, which then burns, or oxidizes, the metal away in a very narrow zone. Once you get this oxidizing process started, the heating part of it is really unnecessary, other than to make up for the inperfections of the person holding the torch. No reason why an 000 tip wouldn't do an acceptable job on 18 gauge or lighter steel, if it was set up properly, and used properly. |
