Reply:I'm thinking he's feeding through the gap with the wire bent upward toward the torch. Just guessing though. Reply:Originally Posted by KGIOROk, so this may sound dumb but from the looks of that finished pipe I don't see how you could reach your arm around to the inside of it, maybe it looks bigger to me then it is. Maybe you reserve that for short sections (elbows and flanges). Do you feed the wire from the inside yourself or does someone / something else feed it while you weld from the outside ???If you do feed it on your own how do you see what you are doing???By the way I didn't say it in my first post but those welds are beautiful. Ken

Reply:Nice lookingMy stuff looks like bubblegum compared to this"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/here are some pics of what im talking about when i feed my wire
Reply:I am speechlessI wish I could weld 1/2 as good as that
Reply:Your welds look pretty good. I'm just kinda amazed that everyone who has posted is so blown away. Feeding the wire that way is pretty much standard practice in the pipe trades. I feed the wire that way as well with a 3/16 th gap and 5/32 fill rod. Good to see our craft is well represented by someone who does it the right way like yourself
Reply:Thanks for the pics, it all makes sense know.Slim,Some of us have never welded pressure vessel pipe, and probably never will. Thanks,KenLast edited by KGIOR; 11-09-2010 at 12:44 AM.

Reply:ok i am definitely impressed by the welding, but what really impresses me, is you pro types can do it with a fixed shade helmet, without an auto dark who knows how close to the mark i will be.  i guess i should put a smile here but i refuse to use emoticons.timJust some stuff in my shop.

Reply:Nice. I've always had an immense amount of respect for guys and gals who can weld pipe. You keep the wheels of industry moving. I trained on a 50 year old steel ship in college, two old 600psi boilers and a 15,500 HP set of turbines, a couple of old GE TG's and a million other steam powered pumps. A total maze of lines that were all welded by qualified men and women such as yourself. Says something about your craft that the beast is still running around to this day. Alright I'm done brown nosing. What was the first set of pictures for?I can remember in the 7th grade my mom said "people will offer you drugs" by the 10th grade I was like, "where the hell are these people?"
Reply:Slim....... words are cheap...... you should post some pictures of your heliarc welds..... since you have it down, and know all about it.  Are you welding to ASME B31.3?  the forum is waiting......because the picture poster is a TRUE MASTER of CS pipe heliarc.A skill onto it's own.  Josey
Reply:Josey, I ain't tigging right now,I'm on stick.should be on 304 stainless in the next week or so. I was putting pics of my work in my profile album but for some reason I can't upload anymore. It says upload disabled. And yes I weld according to b31.3.  And by the way wasn't trash talkin GTO on his welds. They're damn good. I know that I sound like I'm making excuses but only time will tell if I'm full of sh$#  check my album out josey. That's chrome I'm tigging and its severe cylic
Reply:I owe you an apology Slim.  I wasn't trying to call you out, or embarass you.  I'm gettin' on in years (49), and I have met a million guys with hoods, and only a handful can truly weld.  GTO is Badass.  I heliarced some CS pipe about a year ago, and it kicked my ***.  Not so much from a cosmetic apperarance, but in production time.  I was taking to damn long.Anyway, I apologize to you for being a D@#K H%$D.  My bad.Josey.
Reply:Question for you pipe pros here. With that big open pipe and open root doesn't back purging become a necessity?Ken

Reply:B31.3 mandates an argon purge.  Most Generals try to avoid the expense of providing the purge damns, and the cost of the argon.  It adds up to some big bucks.  It's not absolutey necessary, but it should be done, as spec calls for it.  Fail an xray......... and you have two choices, dime the General for lack of purge, or keep your mouth shut and be thankful you have a job.   It's a tough choice....... but life ain't fair.  Never was , never will be.
Reply:Wow, that looks great.Nice work.
