Hello,      New here,  just posted my introduce myself thread.  Now looking for looking for some homework assignments with my benzomatic oxy/mapp setup. I bought a 16 gauge 12"x12" piece of "weldable" steel from home depot to cut and weld.My first attempt with a mild steel flux coated rod ended up in a black mess with no actual welding occurring.  I can see a change between a carbonizing flame and a neutral one, but not sure when the oxidizing flame occurs.  I think that’s my main problem. Can you recommend some practice exercises or drills to help me build some skill. Thanks,Robb
Reply:theres a website called tinman technologies which will help you. cutting:   when you start the torch on fuel you get a black sooty(carburizng)flame. cracking ox valve  creates the sharp little flames in the preheating holes in the tip. a little more ox and these flames get sharper and smaller..this approaches a neutral flame.  an oxidizing flame is a little richer yet in oxygen..thats for cutting.. welding/ brazing requires a different tip with different settings, you still start it on fuel  and bring it to neutral with ox. heat the metal a d rub the rod on it..wwhen it is hot enbough the rod will melt, the flux will melt, with luck the metal will wet and flow..keep reading theres a lot to know...
