The dooods at Uranis Inc. never sleepThis will be a finely documented replacement projectThe old bumper has definitely seen better days, and the truck needs a new one. A simple bumper capable of taking the stress of towing. I often tow trucks with a gooseneck trailer attached to the towed truck. Combined weight might be somewhere around 18,000lbs.I set up the old Dodge with a similar bumper, now it's time to set the Ford up with the same type of bumper.THIS WON'T BE A PRETTY BUMPER, JUST A PLAIN SIMPLE FUNCTIONAL PIECE OF IRONFirst step was to remove the old bumper, and see what problems presented themselves. Primarily, the main problem is how to anchor the new bumper in a nice strong fashion. The "L" shape of the existing tab was cut off, then the remaining piece was punched out to match the "hidden" hole in the frame. The rough hole was cut with a torch, then brought to final dimension with a die grinder. This was easier than grinding off the remaining piece of tab to expose the hole. The pic of the tools laying on the hood are for the benefit of those who haven't used a die grinder before.........note the full goggles, hearing protection, and gloves!!!!!!!!!!Additional plate will be welded to the opposite side of the frame later. This plate will accept the bolts used to hold the bumper on. But that's for tomorrowThe boys at Uranis Inc never sleep Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:THS IS STEP TWOA piece of tubing was clamped to the underside of the frame to give a work surface for gauging height and position of the bumper brackets. The brackets were cut and drilled to accept 3/4 boltsNext, the brackets were fitted to the truck. To do this, the existing holes in the frame, due to the fact they're oval and of no use in this project, were punched out to provide clearance for the 3/4 nuts and washers.I find no problem with cutting the frame at this location. It doesn't support any weight, and no suspension attachments are in the immediate area. The brackets, when welded to the frame, will provide "closure" for any cut areas. The bracket itself will actually take the place of the damaged frame web.The frame cuts were rough cut with a torch, then smoogied with the round stone you see on the grinder. These are available in a wide assortment of shapes, diameters, and arbors. Handy lil' suckersWe at Uranus never sleep Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/ |
