I was given several rolls of this wire in .035.  I can't remember ever running this wire, and I know I have never run it for work related welding.  I have played with this and find it quite easy to run and it produces beautiful welds, much like a 6013 or a 7014 in appearance.  I have read on the net different views, but I want to know what I can use this on.  I have a ball field fence that I will be repairing and a cattle shute/gate that I will also us this on.  I just bought into a deer lease and want to know if I can use it to weld some box stands together and use it to weld atv bridges.  Everything I have read says it is limited to 3/16 and under which is fine as most everything that I will be using it for will be around 10 ga.What do yall think about this wire?
Reply:E71T-GS is an all position product with a Tensile strength of at least 70,000 psi.  Other than that, it doesn't 'fit' any of the other specific categories of filler metal defined in the AWS specs. It's a fine product for general purpose welding.  I wouldn't use it for structural welds or pressure piping welds.  But it's fine for fencework.  I would not use it for your box stands or bridgework.  Some of the products similar to what you have are only good for single pass welds.  I would practice thorough weld prep, and make sure your base metal is clean and bright.  You don't know what kind or how much de-oxidizers are present in the flux of this wire.  So don't take short cuts and rely on the wire to deal with rust/scale in the weld joints.   Originally Posted by Scott YoungI was given several rolls of this wire in .035.
Reply:Yeh, it's rated as single pass. It supposedly needs base metal pick up with each pass to retain decent weld bead characteristics. For general around the farm purposes I think a guy is okay as with three passes as long  there is at least some base metal pick up. Start doing filler over filler and there could be issues on something critical. Of course most of this kinda stuff gets way over welded anyway. Reply:Thanks.  I normally use T11 for my general purpose flux core but I was given this wire for free.  I will end up using this wire for all my stupid stuff like welding a tab on a mailbox and fence repair.  or patching bushhog sheet metal and such.  I just was unsure of its trustworthiness for the frame work of a box stand. or the framework of a small bridge that would cross a ditch or small wash.  I don't want to be sitting in the stand and be awaken out of a great nap when one of the welds decides to let go.I have played around with one of the rolls and I can turn the heat up and push the wire through a 1/4 plate inside an inch of travel.  I won't be welding 1/4 inch with it I was just playing with the settings on my scrap plate that I use to tune in a setting.
