Hey,This title almost sounds like the opener for some sort of advertisement.  I am almost setup for TIG welding, wiring up my sub panel in the garage, getting consumables and grinders, and setting up a steel table are the last of my steps before I can get started on shocking myself.  I mean, creating masterfully made metal products. After doing extensive research I have found some details interesting to myself and perhaps interesting to others.  I am an American born and raised in the USA, although our founding fathers were tax dodging slave owners, I don't believe in slavery.  Which is why, not just for that reason, I prefer to buy products made in the USA.  Unfortunatly, I either cannot find them or afford them.  The only company that makes bench grinders starts at a price mark of around 300 dollars, everyone says they last forever, they are well made and they never break.  Sounds great, but right now I am going to have to go with the used selection or probably the not so ideal crappy chinese product selection. Some say that dewalt has well made products, at least that is what I read when I hear about hand tools and grinders.  Can anyone here agree?  If anything I am going the used route with as much as I can so I don't feel like I am feeding the communist slave giant but I would enjoy hearing an opinion or 5.I went to a local welding supply store recently and they had filler for aluminum, the price seemed alright, like 10 dollars a pound.  But I imagine there can be better deals on the internet or who knows.  They had two types of fillers, and it seems in the world of aluminum there are two more commonly used alloys, 5052-h32 and 6061.  I know very little about the fillers and the guy at the store seemed to know just a little more than I.  Is there a place anyone here prefers to buy from?  Any specific fillers I should keep my eye on?  Everyone likes a universal product, I am sure there is a filler for every job though.
Reply:I don't know where the "best" place is either, but I just ordered a bunch of filler from HTP (htpweld.com). They're all over ebay (username usaweld). The aluminum filler was $4.50-$5/lb, and shipping ended up about $1 per pound for the order. I have no idea if it's imported or not. I also ordered tungsten and a bit of a custom Mig gun for my 252 from them as well. I've decided that my LWS prices stuff too high for a hobbyist (example, a 11 lb spool of .023 wire cost me $43).As for DeWalt, I have a bunch of DeWalt 18V XRP tools (hammerdrill, circ saw, recip saw, flashlight, impact, angle grinder, vacuum) that I got from ToolKing.com (look at their refurbs - the set is $399). I'm very happy with it overall. The flashlight bulbs are my only complaint, they're fragile and $5 each. If the flashlight falls over while lit, pop. There goes 5 bucks.I also have some corded DeWalt tools (1/2" drill and recip saw), they haven't let me down either. The soldering toys pay for the welding toys.Hakko 928 dual iron, 4xHakko 936Madell 850D Hot Air SMT ReworkMiller 252, HTP Invertig 201 AC/DC, and a Hypertherm 45.
