Good afternoon.I have a Victor 100 mid-sized torch body on the way to me, so now it is time to get a few welding tips. I am not particularly worried about cutting right now, so just tips for welding and maybe heating. The Victor literature indicates that this torch uses the W-1 tips, which are in the range of $45 each.It also looks like there is the option of using the UN-1 Universal Nozzle, for about $50, then buy TE Tip Ends, at about $17 each, to change the flame size.1. Is there any compelling reason to go either way? (individual tips vs. nozzle adapter and screw-on tips?) It looks like if I choose the Universal Nozzle, I could also use those same tips on the Flexible Elbow/Dual Flexible Elbow too).2. Would it be better to stick with Victor branded tips, rather than seeking off-brands at a better price?3. Do most folks go ahead and buy the 'whole set' of tips, or just buy the few tips they need for the sort of work they usually do?Kev
Reply:Stick with the Victor brand name. Look around at garage sales, swap meets, Craigslist and Ebay for Victor parts. If you need to do a rush job, any welding supply will have them in stock. They will probably be in the $25 range.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:By going with the W-1 tips, you end up with tips that get longer, as the tip gets larger. A nice and short tip for a 00 lets you get close to the work, while a long tip on a 2 keeps your hands the optimal distance from the heat. Also, you can change the W-1 tips when they're still hot. Tips last a VERY long time if you're brazing and heating. Not as long if you're welding. If you know someone with a TIG welder, you can weld the tip shut, and re-drill it out after they're worn out, giving you an indefinite lifetime. |
