hell everyone.  im hoping someone could help me out.  i have a slip roll and i would like to roll a cone but i have a hard time getting it right.  here are some pics of the pieces im using and what i have ended with.  ive never rolled a cone but im sure im doing something as this is taking me forever and its not even coming out right.  the narrower of the two cones came out ok, i can definitely work with it but the other is way off as you can see fromt he pics.  i would appreciate any help.  i have a manual woodward fab 12" slip roll if that helps Attached Images
Reply:You have to tilt the moving back adjustable roller up more at the big end to get the angle as the metal rolls round otherwise you'll just distort the metal...it isn't a round parallel tube as such and requires more movement on one end than the other.....there is more metal in the circumference of the big diam than the small diam......IE there is more distance to travel in the big end as the cone rolls round.Ian.
Reply:Some rolls have a stop at one end of the frame for making cones.  If not you can make one.  The purpose of the stop is to make the workpiece skid on its own as you feed it through.  I will look around to see if I can find an example somewhere.   You can make a stop out of two short pieces of angle and a strip of thin material about an inch wide that joins the angles outside corner to outside corner.   The stop sits between the upper and lower rolls loose at one end of the frame.this is one example     the guy is using a hand held version.  If you make one with two angles facing each other it can be inserted between the rolls and it will just sit there so that your hands and fingers are away from the pinch zone.... especially inportant with powered rolls.Last edited by lotechman; 09-19-2012 at 08:05 AM.Reason: found site
Reply:thanks for the replies.  i tried adjusting the rollers like you mention puddytat but clearly i got it wrong.  ill try the method with a stop as that looks pretty straight forward.  thanks for the help.
Reply:It is just sheet metal right? Just squeeze the ends together, grab the ends with vise grips and puts some tacks along the seam. If you want it a little more rolled, put it back into the slip roll and adjust until it sits in there right and roll around with light pressure after you tack it together.
Reply:Duhhhh....sheet metal, yeah just pull the ends together and tack it like the man said.Ian.
