Hey guys, I've been welding for several years and have plenty of experience with TIG, MIG, and SMAW (uphill), but I just started learning downhill. I'm working a 5/32" 6010 root, 5/32" 8010 hot pass, and 3/16" 8010 fill & cap. Everything except for the cap is running fine for me so far, when I get to the bottom of the cap (6G position), I keep getting some undercut and considerable droop. The puddle doesn't want to go near the top edge at all. Are there any good techniques for the bottom of the pipe? I feel like there has to be something I'm missing. Thanks

Reply:I'd let it cool completely if you don't already. Weave a tad bit less and speed up a little. When l do any 6G process l favor the upper bevel and pause there. I hit the bottom really quick and back up across to the top bevel and that seems to help fill in the bottom without too much deposition and causing the bead too roll over. If that makes any sense to ya.Works for me anyhow. What was your root gap and land? All l run is 3/32 6010…Nickel land 1/16th gap. Maybe l shouldn't get too comfortable with that...but just thinking of running a 5/32 rod for my root l can see that getting bad in a hurry ha.
