Steel rings have many uses, I can't seem to have enough of them. I use them for tie downs, hanging rings, etc..... As I was cleaning out my scrap pile, I came across some old garage door springs. It dawned on me that if I cut straight down one side, i would have perfect steel rings falling to the ground like free money falling from the sky. Ok.... maybe not that big-a-deal or something to brag about, but like I said.... I love to have a stock of steel rings. Thought I'd share it with ya'll. Don't throw those old springs out! I ended up just cutting short lengths of the spring up, just to have a better way to store it. I can cut as I need them. It's like a ring dispenser. WARNING: wear plenty of safety equipment...the flying rings are impressive. Attached Imageshttp://www.youtube.com/user/c599209/videos
Reply:Thats how I make rings for chainmail but I make the coils myself. Use bolt cutters it saves cutting wheels/saw blades and it doesnt fling them. If you are making alot you can notch the bolt cutters to accept more rings in a single cut.
Reply:really good idea you have there. guess i will be on the look out for some old door springs. thanks for sharing.
Reply:I like the bolt cutter idea.... THANKS. You may have saved me thousands of dollars for renting an ICU room!http://www.youtube.com/user/c599209/videos
Reply:bolt cutters dont work too good on hard springs. of course, you may want to anneal those rings for most purposes anyway. a cable thru the center of the spring will keep the rings from flying.

Reply:Thanks for the idea.I'm going to to have to use this idea.A couple of years ago I was standing under one of these springs when it broke under tension. BAM! Scarred the cr@p out of me!
Reply:it was only after years of having these things break that the door companies added a safety cable thru the spring. |
