I hauled my Lincoln MIG welder in my truck on a rough dirt road and my 12 lb spool unwound a bit. I pulled off what I thought was all of the tangled wire, but its grabbing or something. I cant see any windings crossed, but its driving crazy. I pulled some slack off and it seems to wield ok until the spool starts to turn. I dont want to toss the spool because only light about 5% and Im wondering if I can save it somehow. I wish now I would have saved a couple of 1 lb empty spools to transfer it to and I may have to buy one to use up so I can do that if I can figure out how to wind it on.
Reply:Sleeper When this happens every spool unwinds a little different, so there isn't a perfect answer. If you are lucky, on an empty spool, you can unwind down to the hard-wind, than re-feedback with tension. This has worked for me.How far down 'that rough road' did you drive? Your spool may be 'fluffed' down to the core.If a re-wind doesn't prove promising, consider a total transfer to at least two other spools.Which ever you do, maintain tension [leather slip] and take care not to deflect the wire.Opus

Reply:Thanks, I will give the rewind a try. It was along windy mountain road about 10 miles long. I’ve hauled the welder on dirt roads before, but this is the first time that I remember having a problem. I had tightened the spool down pretty tight before leaving and next time I’m going to have to remove the spool I guess. This is the first I’ve heard about Lincoln wire being bad |
