this was with the harbor freight 110V stick with DCEP and 7014 1/16" rod. Just messing around really but wanted to get input from others. this is 3/16" to 1/4" plated. I used a 3/8" end mill to mill into the welds to see what they looked like. I know this is overstretching the little stick welder.
Reply:bend it. i suspect it will break. 3/16 to 1/4 is way outside the parameters of your rod and machine. also, what is with all the splatter? it looks like you have long arced. the 7014 is a drag rod and there should be no splatter.Last edited by Scott Young; 10-24-2009 at 09:12 AM.
Reply:nice bead tho. try it with a drag/short arc, you should see better penetration
Reply:You know, for a less-than-$100 investment, that thing's got some value as a way for guys to start learning while they save up for a bigger machine. I've got one sitting in the box here that I haven't used yet. You can get 5/64 6013 rods from IOC for it, which (I'm told) are a good match.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:Yeah I want to get my hands on those 5/64 rods. There is so much slag on the these 16th rods that I get better results when I angle the piece to have the slag slide downhill. Sometimes I'll get a pool of slag that forces me to stop, chip and move on. On the above weld I was pulling and doing a C motion and I tried to hold a short arc. Heading back in the garage to weld because it is so much fun. Out of the many things that I do for fun, welding is darn near the top and I'll be picking up a nice machine soon!

Reply:I have burned 3/32" 6010s/11s with the $149.00 gray machine. 3/32" 7018 were a bit more difficult. Some companies make a 5/64 7018 (or used to). that would be neat.
