I want to get some pipe to start practing and was wondering what I should get? What would be a good size to start with, 6 inch? Thanks
Reply:In college we started on 4 and 6 inch pipe. We go as big as maybe 10.
Reply:In practice any size you can find.

Reply:What about the pipe wall thickness?
Reply:We used 3/8" thickness in my welding class, but some of it was as thin as 1/4". Downhill on the thin pipe and uphill on the thicker. The thin stuff will heat up a lot faster going uphill and is prone to just blowing a hole in the pipe.My vintage equipment 1957 Lincoln sa 2001980's Lincoln 225 AC1952 F-2 ford truck1957 F-250 ford truck
Reply:In school right now I am working with 6" schedule 80 with a 30 degree bevel, an 1/8"-5/32" root-face and an 1/8" gap. I make my root pass with 1/8" 6010 at about 80 amps. My cap and filler is done with fcaw. In the class everyone on pipe goes from 6" to 4" to 2". I hope this helps.
Reply:6" schedule 40 with 37* bevels is what we practiced on in the school.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:just start out runnin beads on pipe ( overlay ). then once you get the feel for the angle movments you have to make, get after the root, hot pass, fill and cap. i suggest 4'' or 6'' because smaller pipe like 2'' your changing your rod angle fast and with out a good idea and comfort of a pipe weld, you may get frustrated quickly. but get good on 4 or 6. then master the real small stuff and you'll be on a fast track. (just another opinion)
Reply:cheap?after you get it down on whatever is cheap then get something that you need to pass for a job and practice on that.
