Hi All;We are constructing a wellhead platform in Turkmenistan. Our project's welding code is AWS D1.1. As you see at the attachment there is one joint which is one side beveled and one side is not beveled. My foremen assert that this is 6GR position and welder who will weld this joint shall be qualified from 6GR position. But as i know 6GR position is only for pipe to pipe brace joints. Moreover it is very hard to find well skilled welder and in this country we have to employ 70% local personell as per laws.I searched from AWS D1.1 and i couldnt find anything about this is a 6GR position. Could you please help me about this topic. Thanks... Attached Images
Reply:No that is not 6GR. See the links below for welding positions. The 6GR is with the pipe at a 45º angle with a restricting ring. Thus the R in 6GR.http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...ed=0CCsQ9QEwBQhttp://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...%3Disch&itbs=1jrw159
Reply:6Gr at a local shipyard means the pipe is angled at 45 degrees inside of a 3 sided box 6" from the top of the bevel 1' from the 3oclock side and 6" from the 12oclock side of the bevel
Reply:If the welding is done in the configuration shown in your photo that would qualify your welders for 1G flat welds only. NOT 6GR!Claiming your welders are certified for 6GR when in fact they are only certified to do 1G would be criminal negligence.Groove welds on flat plate qualify as 1G through 4G  depending on the position of the plate when the welding is performed. 1G = flat 2G = horizontal 3G = vertical 4G = overhead 5G and 6G refer to pipe welds. 5G is a horizontal pipe..in other words the joint of the pipe is in the vertical plane. 6G is a diagonal pipe weld. Pipes that run vertically with the joint in the horizontal plane also qualify as 2G. Rotated pipe welds usually qualify as 1GCertification tests will usually also need to specify whether the joint has an open root or whether any kind of back-up is used.Note that a single bevel groove of only 30 degrees included angle is a poor joint design.Narrow angle groove welds tend to markedly increase the likelihood of lack of fusion defects and slag inclusions.  For horizontal open root welds you will want to bevel the overhanging plate at least 45 degrees. For other positions you will want to use a double bevel with at least 60 degrees included angle. in other words, a 30 degree bevel on both sides of the plate.Last edited by Joshfromsaltlake; 09-28-2012 at 07:11 PM.
Reply:Guys thanks for all. I convinced him now
Reply:Get a copy of a good welding manual and keep it handy for when the non-welders think they know more than the welders. Words dont always work for people (especially when their native language is different) but pictures are pretty universally understood.
