I am new to welding and just picked up a MIG/Flux 105 welder and have a question.I bought it used and the previous owner had it setup with a bottle of 75% Argon / 25% CO2. He wasn't much help in explaining how he had the setup with wire as he had only used it once a few years ago. The wire spood doesn't have a label on it. My question is... If he has Flux wire in there, is it going to be bad/dangerous to use the gas with that wire? Thanks for any help,Nick
Reply:Not dangerous.Bad, only in poor welds.Fluxcore looks Grayish while Solid wire looks Copperish- unless it has rustEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Weld with it with the gas turned off. If it makes a slag deposit over the weld and no porosity, it's flux wire. If no slag but alot of porosity, it's solid wire.Solid wire runs with the torch on the positive terminal. Self shield flux wire runs with the torch on the negative terminal. Drag the torch with flux. Push or drag with solid and gas.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:The polarity difference between solid and self shielded flux core is going to be an issue here. The polarity has to be set for whichever wire is on there.Oops, I didn't read Desert Riders last sentence. He has it covered.
Reply:Solid wire is, well, solid....Flux-core will break when you bend it....

Reply:Yah liked that Sam? D R posts a two liner and I missed reading one of em. That's pretty bad
Reply:Thanks for all the replies. I was able to bend the wire 8 or 10 times in the same place and it didn't break.I feel better knowing what's in there. Nick |
