Anyone know any good ergonomics for a welding table? I think mine maybe a little too short or I did too much welding yesterday. My back isn't in the greatest shape, so I want to be careful on how and how long I'm leaned over.I think my tabletop is 28" off the ground and I'm only 5'7".Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:Mine around 36" too.  I have one at 39" that is nice for bench close tog welding. My eyes aren'twhat they use to be. that couple inches makes a difference.
Reply:I have a couple 3ft tables and they always seem high for tig work, fine for everything else tho. Im short. At work we have a bunch of acorn tables that are 27in, and I love em for tig work. Reply:I'm 5'-10" with a "bad" back. My bench is at 38-1/2". It's a littel higher than a standard bench at 34". It's been working out great for me. With and without the stool. Attached Images

Reply:I have a 4x10 rolling table and am most comfortable standing while I work. I made mine for a specific job (lots of 1 1/2" square tube welding) and didn't want to be bending over my work all day. In any case, it's just below my elbow and I love it. Too high for most people, but you won't see me with a sore back any time soon from welding all day. Oh, and I'm 6'4", so it's a high table.
Reply:I want to say mine is 41" but I'm 6'5" I'll have to measure it again. I think it's still to low. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:I like two or three inches less than "belly button" height.  That's tall enough you can stand up while working, but still low enough you can still lean on it with elbows.  If you're working on big stuff, then you may want a shorter table.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Mine is about 3 feet as well. I have an adjustable height chair.
Reply:After careful consideration I put my table at 36-1/2" and I'm 6'5". I think it's maybe a half an inch to an inch low.It looks like about an inch under your wrist when your arms are hanging and you're standing normally is just right.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:I'll measure the ones we have where I work tomorrow;  They seem to work well for bench based projects, although they have to be close to the ones mentioned!
Reply:I notice that the benches/tables are all made with substantial tops for welding on, but most of them are covered in sh!t.......those benches should be in the middle of the shop with all the junk off and on to shelves at the back of the shop.....not even a vice to be bolted on......the vice should be fixed to a piec of plate that is clamped to the top when needed, so making it available only when it's needed. Can't stand a cluttered up work bench.I worked for a guy once who had everything piled on the bench and he worked on the floor.......had a bad back......I wonder why.I only worked there for a week, on day one I took a broom and pushed everything off onto the floor, but within a week almost half the bench was once again covered in junk.Ian.
Reply:Mine is 1 metre or 40" tall and I am 6'2", I like it a bit higher due to back problems.Cheers Andrew

Reply:37 1/2", I am 6' an inch up or down wouldn't matter too much. This height also matches outfeed for my saws, other workbench height (old bench that was my great grandfathers), atc. Make them all the same so you can use them together when needs dictate.
Reply:Pusdytat, I'm sure you'll find most farm shop tables quite cluttered this time of year (harvest). Stuff breaks in the field, repaired in the shop, and cleanup waits for a rainy day. GGDs were abnormally high in this part of the country making corn harvest start earlier than expected. My combine has already let me know it needed some work.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A
Reply:I have 2 benches, 1 about 32" and 1 about 36" (I am 5'11"). The taller bench gets used for flatter shapes, sheet metal, etc. The shorter bench is used for larger weldments and also has a vice mounted on it.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:34-38 " depending on your height and the job your doing. If you stay on the short side you can always block your work up or put a false table on the top of the bench to get it comfy. Build it to tall and your looking for something to stand on or just plain stuck with it. I would go to the lower side and work from that. Think kitchen tables are about 34 , counters are 36-38 if I remember right."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:GambleI'm 6'2", all of my work surfaces are 38 inches high.  I have: three inch top tables, two burning tables, and heavy service saw-horses - these are the saw-horses that Won the West.  I chose a common height so everything could be press into service for large/heavy fabrications without having to deal with elevation [blocking] issues.  This height is not my universally ideal, but a compromise between functions.  Perfect height is somewhere between what is comfortable for the body, and low enough to accommodate workability of what you regularly put upon it. Comfort on the burning table gave me 38".  I'd prefer the work tables were 40" plus, and the saw horses 36" minus, but this mix doesn't provide for an instant large variable plane, so all are 38".   If a work table is your singular interest, error on the very tall side.  You might consider taking your table for a test drive with a temporary riser, and dial in your comfort before committing to a hard re-build.Opus

Reply:I built mine to 38" specifically to be comfortable seated on the stool for close up tig work, as well as most stick passes. I'm also not bending much while standing, mostly with the mig. That assumes the work is at table level which a lot of what I'm doing is just practice and trying to better my skills. Reply:Standard table/desk height is 30".  That's a height where you're expected to be seated in a standard chair while you're working (or eating, or whatever).Standard counter height is 36", where you're expected to be standing while you work or seated on a stool.  Work benches often deviate from the 36" standard, and generally fall between 34" and 42" high, depending on the type of work that's being done on them.I'm 5' 11" and all of my benches are 37", which makes cutting long stock easier in such a small shop.  Even my car lift goes to that height.Jack OlsenMy garage website

Reply:Has anyone put like trailer jacks on a bench. Most of mine are 36" [ I am 5'8"] and they are usually about right but sometimes taller would be nice and it would also be great to have a shorter one sometimes and be able to put a chop saw on and be 36" to saw level. So I would say 1 36" and 1 adjustableAlso weld a Reese reciever that comes out front for vice and grinder mounting, can also add support for bigger jobsLast edited by Jo Diesel; 10-09-2012 at 09:12 AM.Reason: added Reese reciecerMiller 180,Esab 300I TIG Lincoln Stick [1950's} Victor Torches, Dewalt chop saw, Enco 9x48 Mill,  48x60 home shop with Gantry crane and Pit.
