My Grand son came to visit today He is 2 1/2 and loves to be in the shop with me. He is a tool guy and motor head in training, and already knows "Righty tighty, Lefty loosey" along with the names of several basic tools and car par Attached Images

Reply:My older daughter always wanted to be with me when I was "fixing" something. Even at 2 she would stand and watch while I replaced a doorknob or sit on the fender (1966 cars had fenders) and watch me work.Wonder if that had anything to do with her getting a Master's degree in engineering?John
Reply:Those are great pictures. My little guy is 2-1/2 too. I'm going to have to teach him the righty-tighty rule. My wife took these about a week ago when I re-welded the steering wheel shaft on his push car:Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:Seems like just yesterday my kiddo was 2 years old. Today he is 20 years old and in his second year at A&M university. They grow up all too fast. Ram48 and Jack,Great pics of your little helpers!

Reply:Time with lil people can be rewarding, something to look back on too. They don't stay there long enough tho. Time zings by pretty fast."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:This is just what I was hoping for. Keep them coming. Its good to see that there will be at least some that will carry the love of building and creating into the future.

Reply:I have been wondering when I should start my grandson welding. He will be 7 this summer, I know it's still a little early. When he is ready I will probably start him out on O/A.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Forgot to mention that I gave both granddaughters (5 and 8) tool kits and birdhouse kits for Christmas a year ago. They also got the time with me (or I got the time with them ;-) to build and paint the birdhouses. Depends on the kid, but 5 is about a young as I would try to teach using hand tools. O/A welding would be more like 12, unless we're talking about a VERY responsible kid who takes direction well and believes the cautions: "I know it's not red, but it's still too hot to touch." My engineer daughter had to try that for herself with an element on the electric range (she was maybe 5 or 6). It only took the one touch to make her a believer :-(John
Reply:Wait... grandkids?See, this is what happens when you wait until you're 45 to start a family. I'm going to always be mistaken for my own kid's grandfather. Jack OlsenMy garage website

Reply:My oldest, youngest and only....19 months old, 2nd word was tractor, now he can tell different tractor brands apart...this was him last week in the garage working on grandpas car...silly me though he was going to hang out and play with his legos.
Reply:Aww. Little versions of you guys. You think my 10 year old niece is too young to learn to weld? I figure start her on the O/A then move over to stick then tig. Maybe 2 or 3 days a week after homework is done. She likes watching me work and keeping the tools clean but I always make her leave when I start welding. Sometimes it's a little nerve racking when she's around and I'm doing work on the Peterbilt or moving around wheels with the forklift. Her mother seems to think she's too young. I recall her "accidentally" getting me high on something when I was around 7 and she was 17...I can remember in the 7th grade my mom said "people will offer you drugs" by the 10th grade I was like, "where the hell are these people?"
