I'm not quite sure where to begin so ill just start!  I am currently in school for a welding degree and have been through the SMAW and GMAW(short circuit transfer) going onto spray and spray pulse now.  I had a welding job over the summer working with GMAW with sheet metal pipe and got laid off and have recently been looking for another job.  Today i got a call from a job and after talking, i realized (and by the sounds of it, they realized also) that i may not be qualified for this job.  I have to go take a weld test doing GMAW and some Tig on stainless (maybe mild steel too?)   this friday and the guy basically told me that i should come in and just give it a shot and if i make it cool, if not, atleast i tried.  I'm a bit worried because ive done VERY little tig on mild steel and nothing as far as stainless goes.  It sounds like theyre in a bind and im really hoping to pass by blind luck and maybe get some free lessons?  I guess what im asking is, am i thinking reasonably here or am i going into this thing to fail from the get go?
Reply:Don't overthink this. Stainless is still a ferrous metal, and is not much different than carbon steel you already do. Face it, you are a master ferrous weldor. You should show up prepared to weld and the company should do likewise. The mig welder should be filled with stainless wire, and the gas should be in place. Just turn on, adjust if needed and weld. The tig side is no different than steel, and the dirty little secret is that it holds it's shape better. Only thing I can wonder is the level of purge that the company uses. If none, so be it. If critical, ask for the parameters, and have fun. You are there to run the weld, not the department. Also don't make any excuses. Every process needs it's tweeking. You can't just show up, tackle someone else's equipment and dominate right away. Do the samples and let them judge. Give them a full account of your education and experience and let them decide.  A lot of the interview is the confidence you bring. And a willingness to put in 100% to the job. If they sense that, they may take that leap of faith. Sometimes it is all in how you market yourself. Good Luck, I would take a chance on you. Reply:Ha ha, thanks for the encouraging words.  I think the only thing being done in stainless is tig so i dont think ill be welding any with mig.  I'm just curious is all and a little nervous because i havent learned much tig besides about a week in school where i had a chance.  I was able to get down the motion of it though, and got to the point i could run 6" or so without stopping, so its worth a shot! thanks! And the fact i dont really know how to set up a tig machine >.< hehe...Last edited by alext-09; 10-09-2012 at 12:54 AM.
Reply:Do you know anyone that does tig on stainless? A little advice and pointers and a little practice before your interview and you should be fine. Maybee the teacher you had could help you out.Miller 180,Esab 300I TIG Lincoln Stick [1950's} Victor Torches, Dewalt chop saw, Enco 9x48 Mill,  48x60 home shop with Gantry crane and Pit.
Reply:you're in school now right? ask the instructor to give you a crash corse before the interview to give you a little step up. It's the instructors job/calling to get your ready for the work force. They'll help you out more than we can over the internet. Having been of both sides of the highering table it's about confidence and adapability. no one is perfect for a job when they interview for it. But if they are moldable, and capable they are a good candidate for the job. There are no problems. There are only solutions.
