Does anyone know if building a smoker out of P&O A-36 steel would be safe? I was thinking that if I clean it all with acetone and do a good burn in that that would be enough to get rid of the oil. I don't want to make anyone sick, so I figured I should ask first. Thanks. Why buy it for $10 when you can build it yourself for $100.
Reply:Just like any other steel, just do a hot brn in it first to burn of all the oil.
Reply:X2 on the hot burn-in, or you could use a rosebud or one of those propane weed burners if you know someone with one.

Reply:Cool. Thanks for the info. I called to get a quote on a 5'x10' sheet of 1/4" P&O plate and they said $338. Is that a resonable price? I've never bought a full sheet of plate. Why buy it for $10 when you can build it yourself for $100.
Reply:Just buy hot rolled. Hot rolled steel is the same as P&O before it is acid washed (pickled) and oiled. Since you are just going to burn stuff in it it will develop a scale to it, so jst use hot rolled.
Reply:walker, I was thinking about P&O because it is cheaper then hot rolled. (by over $100 a sheet.) I'm going to be building this for a guy I know and want to do it as cost effective as possible. Luckily for me, I have a 13 year old son that wants to learn to work with metal, so I won't be doing any of the oil clean up. Why buy it for $10 when you can build it yourself for $100.
