Welding School

Been looking into welding schools but all are a good ways out. There is one that is pretty close but they say I may have to go to another campus to do some of the courses that is located bout a hour an a half away. Is schooling needed to be in the welding field or can I go to a closer campus an do the certificate programs to still get a job in the welding field? I have a campus that is about 15 minutes away but they only do the certificate programs and the other that has has most of the classes is about 45 minutes there all the same campus but only offer certain things at each one expect the one that is a hour and a half away they do the whole program. Reply:I may get some disagreement here.............In my case, I learned more from old welders under a shade tree or in their small back yard shop that I ever learned in a class room.You just stated that you may need to spend 3 hours travel time for each class. Look around and see if there's an old retired welder / iron worker / millwright who might work with you locally. You may find you pick up more in 3 hours under the hood than you would spending 3 hours behind the wheel.Where are you located? Again, just an opinion.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:Im located in Douglasville, Ga I found a school about 30 mintues from me. Is it easier to learn from old timers and go and get aws certified or do the schooling?
Reply:If you want more than just a job, the school is a good choice. I mig welded for a few years, and could it pretty well. The school I am in now cover a lot more than just welding. Types of metals, effects of heat on metals, blueprint reading, CAD, layout and fab.  I have to pay 200$ for each course, and have used much more than that in materials and gas. At least a few hundred in 3/8 and 3/4 plates to learn 3g/4g welding. Also... I have had to unlearn the bad habits that the old timers I learned from taught me.  The old timers never made to much worry of undercut or slag inclusions or other types of defects.  Defects can kill a certification test real quick.
Reply:Teaching is a skill in it's self! Just because a guy can weld, doesn't mean he can teach. But then again there are teachers who can not teach. A lot of us hands on type guys can learn faster from another hands on type of guy. In my opinion, there is nothing like one on one instruction. You'd be amazed how fast you will learn when someone reaches around you, grabs your hand and makes a few welds holding your hand. Reply:lol been off a few days. Ill see if  I can find a old welder around that wouldent mind teaching me I can mig alright an flux but have never stick or ran tig.
