Hey guys,Ok, gonna post a fun thread for a change. Gonna give a free gift, nothing major, just useful, to the first correct answer. Those of we " 'ol timers" who grew up in the heydays of the muscle cars will probably know if they were Chevy gurus. I posted my V8 mailbox projects a while back & my bro', who builds Chevy engines, enlightened me I needed to really show a wee bit more detail. He showed me a 70 Chev Camaro engine he refreshed for a customer & the detail I was lacking. I told him I could do that. The first pic are the 1st two V8 boxes I made, one for my bro, & the 2nd was my prize donation the racetrack for last season. The 2nd & 3rd pics are the one I just finished for this years' donation. There is a difference. It is something that Chevy engine gurus will know & hopefully notice. The first correct answer gets the (3) Dinse 50 connectors in pics 4 & 5 free incl. shipping. They were lying in my misc. drawer collecting dust & I don't need them....maybe someone else can use them.Ok.... who's gonna be the first one to see it?Denny Attached ImagesComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:"casting" marks on the heads.
Reply:I'm guessing the "B" shaped marks on the heads..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:camel back heads !
Reply:.202 double hump heads.  Ohhh yeah...BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:I'm 45 min to late. I used to have a 69 Z/28 302 that had the double hump heads. I'm not sure if that was the first for them or not.By the way this is my first post ever on the world wide web.  I'll go back to hiding in the shadows.
Reply:That was too easy.    Cool mail boxes thou. If I put one of those on the street someone would steal it.
Reply:Hey, welcome aboard Ohiocowboy Now, for the tiebreaker, who takes a shot at the model year of the blocks that Yorkiepap builds?Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 01-30-2011 at 08:45 PM.

Reply:Hey guys,Wow! Glad to see so many who remember the 'ol Chevy hi-po heads & their designations. Since I didn't really define the description as to true nomenclature, member "daddy" with the first response gets the dinse connectors. I will commend "norsky63" for the correct title of these heads....."Double Camelback" they were called. These were the high performance heads on the Corvettes originally. There were also the single "hump" camelbacks on the low compression engines. Thanks for your interest & knowledge with the 'ol Chevy powerplants. I'll have to think of another bit tougher query to post & really test some memories.Ok, daddy, PM me with your address & I'll send you those connectors. Thanks again guys....DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. ShopMobile UnitFinally retired*Moderator*"A man's word is his honor...without honor there is nothing.""Words are like bullets.... Reply:What is the difference in a 427 Ford block VS a 428 block? Not including the bore..Denny I was going to say the difference is the middle cylinders exhaust ports are spaced different.....zap!Last edited by zapster; 01-30-2011 at 11:26 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:About forgot.Ford made the 427cid motor, the 428 motor, the 429 motor, the 428 Cobra Jet, the 429 Super Cobra Jet, all were different motors.  Several 427 motors were actually outlawed by NASCAR, yet NASCAR left the Hemi in.  Politics?  Who knows.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Hey Zap,Now that is some superb observation. You are quite correct. When I made the 1st one, the prototype I gave to my brother, I had spaced the exhaust headers evenly, not knowing that the center exhaust ports were very close together. My bro' pointed it out when he first saw his. The 2nd & subsequent units had the correct spacing. You can see it on the first pic as it's the one with the hex air cleaner.Hey denrep:  Ok...I give up. Clarify the "sleeper heads" contribution.....Hey MarkBall:  Are you sure about the 427 & 428 blocks configuration. I'm not a Ford man, so I'm not real familiar with their c.i. variances. I did a full resto on a '68 Mustang 427 Cobra GT for my friend, Dave, & I think he said it was a 427 Cobra Jet. Dave has the records from Ford that shows that his car is one of the original 53 made, & there are only (5) of the originals left in existence. Last year at the Pittsburgh car show, Gene Simmons of KISS offered to buy it from Dave for his collection. Dave said he was offered $250K, although didn't sell it. Make you wonder, doesn't it?Anyway guys, thanks for all the history with the 'ol classic/muscle cars. As far as I'm concerned, these facts aren't detracting from the op, so keep contributing if you feel like.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:Yorkiepap - About "sleeper heads." I never knew anyone who did it, but I heard that guys would reshape the "humps" or casting marks, to disguise hi-po heads. As to the year of your blocks, I didn't see side mounts or an oil filter. MarkBall2 - I liked FEs.  For an everyday motor, the 410 was a hot one too.Actually the evolution was from 390 to 360, or I suppose 352 to 360 considering trucks only, with the 360 introduced a few years later than mentioned. But you had to have a card-carrying EZ-out Journeyman, to keep the exhaust quiet. The "truckized" engines didn't last so well either, they were a valve swallower. Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 01-31-2011 at 12:37 AM.
Reply:Well Denny, Ford did make a 427 Cobra Jet, but it wasn't the same as the racing motor.  Water jackets were lower so the cross bolt mains weren't available for the "standard" 427.  I'm not sure if the Cobra Jet was a cross bolted block or not.Ford also made a SOHC 427.  It was a true racing engine also, just like the side oiler.  Massive timing chains to run the cams on the heads.  And from what I've been told, they sounded different - had a different exhaust note.428's were used as irrigation motors in Nebraska for quite a few years too.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:I'm too "new school"!The one on the right looks like a carbureted Gen-II LT-series (ex LT1/LT4)The one on the left looks like a carbureted Gen-III LS-series (ex LS1/LS2/LS3/LS6, etc)
