Picked up a 6" atlas the other day and I am wanting to build a bench for it since the table the came with it takes up to much room in the garage so I'm looking for something with a smaller foot print. I like the one in the pictures i posted. The stand In the pictures was built from 4"x6" 1/4" wall tubing. I don't have any off this nor do i wanna buy a stick of it too much $. So I am wondering what I can use for the frame. Would like to try and keep the cost on the low side. I was thinking of using 2"x2" or 2"x3" 1/8" or 3/16" wall tubing or something similar to the size and wall thickness. would this be rigid enough using one of the materials list above that the bed would not twist? if not I would appreciate any suggestions on what material to use or to at least hear from others what size tubing they have used in the past for their lathe stand. Also I am trying to think of a way to mount the counter shaft and the motor with out adding much depth to the to the stand. Any ideas or information would be appreciatedhere are links to the pictures from the hobart forum:http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtal...4&d=1130317939http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtal...8&d=1136617707http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtal...9&d=1136617714http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtal...7&d=1136669185http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtal...9&d=1136669202ThanksAndy

Reply:Wow the stainless look great with the blue. Why did you paint it red like the lathe. Very nice job on the stand anyways.                                 VernonHomemade Belt Sander "LINK"http://s795.photobucket.com/albums/y...Belt%20Sander/
Reply:Bravo,  very nice.

Reply:That base is worth more than the lathe sitting on top of it!
Reply:I myself would pass at a stand like that..Drawers under it?Wait until you see how fast they get full of chips..Fluids..Gunk in general..I don't care if they are closed at all times all that trash will find it's way in eventually....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I'll probably pass on the drawers on the upper half of the stand as many people have pointed out that drawers like chips and settle for a cabinet on the bottom. I have been told that 2" 16ga square tube should be fine for my lathe so I'll get to planning and hopefully have the money to start building soon.
Reply:No hijack intended, but any one tell me what the size of the lathe in the pic is?200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:I like the height on that stand but I'm not so sure about the front legs being angled outward. I don't want to run my ankles into cross braces or drawers in this case. I am going to be building a new table for my South Bend soon because it sits on a wooden table where it has sat for 40 years that I know of. I am thinking I want something where I can use a bar stool type chair and roll up right close the the lathe itself. The only priorities are a chip pan and a small tool tray to hold bits and wrenches and since my lathe is old the stack of gears to change speeds.“Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!”
Reply:I've been wondering if it would make much difference in stopping vibration if i through bolted vs tapped. I know i wouldn't be tapping in 16ga but i could weld a thicker plate on for tapping.Anyone think putting some rubber down between the frame and the lathe would do much for stopping vibration?
Reply:The only vibration your lathe should have is if your tooling isn't set up correctly or you're hogging too much material. No need for vibration dampening and I wouldn't mount anything in between the two.“Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... Reply:ahhh guess i wasn't understanding that's why it would vibrate.Does it make much difference how i bolt it down? or is it personal preference?
Reply:Can anyone tell us how the owner of this stand built the drawers? They are very slick! I would like to know to make them...
