Hello everyoneI have been a welding hack for quite a few years and just started attempting aluminum.I have a Lincoln 216 and a Magnum 250LX spool gun. The spool gun is much more than I need but I did not like the Magnum 100 and have tended to buy smaller equipment in the past than lose big when upgrading later. My question is wire speed versus build up. I understand that increasing wire speed increases amperage and than I would also think better penetration but wouldn't it also increase build up. My welds usually seem to have too much of a concave look to them so I was thinking increasing wire speed would give me more penetration and less build up but do not understand why putting down more wire would not just give me more build up again.I would think increasing the voltage is the answer but I have read that many people on here increase wire speed for better penetration.Any help would be great. I am finally trying to learn how to weld correctly.
Reply:In reality it's a combination of both that increase or reduce the build up. think of it this way. If the metal is thicker, it needs more penetration to complete the weld. at the same time the larger materials should have more area to fill if the bevel is at the same angle as a smaller piece. so increaseing the wire speed will increasing the penetration also increases the amount of filler material you add to the joint thus filling the larger void left by the bevel. The added voltage increases the power, and thus the heat put into the joint to allow for deeper/wider penetration of the weld. the wider the puddle can spread, the lower the build up will be in comparison. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Thanks for the feedback. I have been running some test beads lately and played with the voltage as you indicated it really helped to spread the bead and prevent some of the big build up I have been getting. I have been adjusting the wire speed too much without also using the voltage as well. |
