Hi, allI got one of those cheap 12 ton 1/2'' to 2'' Hydraulic Pipe Bender.  I bought it 15 years ago and for what it is , it works ok. when I got it I made a tripod type stand for it. The problem is multiple bends it hits the stand.  I've tried laying it down then the jack won't pump.  Today I got an Idea. to make an a-dapter  to go on a hoist.  now if the pipe is too long... just raise the hoist and nothing in the way under the bender.   Does any know of a guide for the rolls to pipe size?  when I figure a size out I never write it down.  I know that 1'' pipe takes out 1"   (marks 12'' a part in the center of the shoe will make a U 14'' center to center)  with the rolls in the 4th hole down from the top.Daye Attached Images
Reply:A magnetic protractor works good for getting nice 90*s . I go about 5* to 6* degrees past 90* ( over bent ) then bent back in a vise or something.Daye

Reply:Finally someone who has the same bender and same problems as me! Not only does it crash into the bender, but it seems to kink everything I put in it. Even If I pack the tube with sand...  Last edited by oxygen454; 01-17-2011 at 10:29 PM.

Reply:I bend 2 1/2 sch 40 in a 2 1/2 die and I got a big kink... maybe Im using it wrong? I put the die on, then bring the rollers down as close as the holes allow for the pins to slide through. Then I pump away and it kinks?Im envious of your shop and by the way. Is that your work as well or at home?Last edited by oxygen454; 01-17-2011 at 10:37 PM.Reason: typo

Reply:Now that I think about it, I think the pipe was slightly bigger than the die. Probably the main reason for the crumple. I will have to get some scrap pipe at work and play with it. All our pipe is schedule 40 and up. I too would like to know how to preform a perfect bend with it. I remember in school, they tough us that the metal will stretch and pull one way more than the other... there also was some math for bend allowance if I remember right? Its been a while lol.
Reply:Found a good read on pipe bending HEREI also found a program to calculate bending HERE(Sorry I hope Im not flooding your thread. I have been wondering this myself and found some useful info.)Last edited by oxygen454; 01-17-2011 at 11:38 PM.
Reply:Very nice stand and modification to solve your problem. I especially like the thumb screws.
Reply:I have a 16 ton I got from Homier several years ago. I have used it hanging from my tractor loader to do multiple bends. A pivoting joint on your tripod stand might allow a little more flexibility to avoid hitting the ground or the stand. A telescoping function might also be good.  I havent't used mine on anything bigger than 2". With Sch 10, sometimes the inside of the bend will ripple and the outside flattens. With old rusty pipe it seems more prone to kink. I had one bend on new 3/4" sch40 uncoated unthreaded pipe that split open because the seam was on the outside of the bend. My best "mod" is a pair of saddles about 6" long made from a piece of 2" pipe split lengthwise. They pad the pipe at the side rollers to eliminate the dents that otherwise occur there.Lincoln SA200, HH135, Lencospot, HF80 Inverter, Rockwell 11x35 lathe, HF drill mill, Kama 554 tractor w/ FEL & BH, Belarus 250AS, lot's of Chinese tools
Reply:Here is a Gettrikes bender I builtno problems with tubing bending back into the ender or anything else.have funTom Attached Images
Reply:Are you talking about kinks from the rollers? I built a roll bar with the HF bender. I doubled up on a scrap piece of pipe to stop the kinking. Mine pumped fine on the floor:
Reply:Tom where do you get plans for that?

Reply:[QUOTE=gow589;462020]  Mine pumped fine on the floorwhen I laid it on its back so the pipe could under the the bender.the only time I had a problems with kinks is when the 2'' shoe flatten out then it started to kink under the shoe. great idea. the scrap under the roller! sweet roll barDaye
Reply:I too like the scrap metal idea. The kink I was referring to was from the shoe and not the rolls.
Reply:if you can find some greenlee shoes they won't kink the pipe
Reply:Im new here and i might be outa line here, but most of those benders are for conduit bending, i was told, not pipe or tubing. I worked in an auto exhaust shop when i was a kid and we made alot of roll bars and tube bumpers, and exhaust tubing is a hair{ blond hair i think} bigger then sch. 40 or 80 2" pipe, but we would bend it in the old blueboy bender anyway, on a real tight bend it would tend to flatten out but not bad enough that it could not be used. sorry got long winded there. If you see me running for no apparent reason, try to keep up:"Reality" What a concept!Miller Big 40 {1972} vintage, with 150 ft. of 000 leads, old Alaskan pipline welder.
Reply:2" schedual 40 is .154 which is a blond hair over 1/8   I think exhaust tube is 1/16 to 1/8? Schedual 80 is .218 which is closer to 1/4 wall thickness. When you get into bigger pipe, you get a lot thicker walls...
Reply:ok, check out sites for old used exhaust benders you can find them cheap, and they have dies to swedge the ends and expand, make flanges, there a lot of fun to operate. just a thought...If you see me running for no apparent reason, try to keep up:"Reality" What a concept!Miller Big 40 {1972} vintage, with 150 ft. of 000 leads, old Alaskan pipline welder.
