My son and I are restoring an old John Deere 216 garden tractor and had to make a couple of welding repairs.   The motor mounts had been broken before and did a good bit of damage to the frame before they were welded....but the previous owner did not bother to fix the damaged areas in the frame ..so we had to do that. I am not a pro welder, don't claim to be. Just enjoying the father/son project and trying to fix up a few things....Here's some pics. BEFORE...AFTER...These pics show a cross member that was worn by the motor after the mount broke....BEFORE...AFTER...This is a dash panel that had been rusted out by battery acid. I cut out the rusted area and welded in some good metal...cleaned it up with the grinder.....and then degreased, primed, and painted it..it is now curing and will be ready to install when we start putting the tractor back together.

Reply:Hey GoatNot to rain on your project but its the wrong color! I like them yellow or red!  But Ive had a few green ones too. Heres my sons CC 582 that I put a mag 18 in with a 900 psi pulling clutch spring and kevlar clutch disk. I too redo them, but a far cry from a resto job. Looks good I think they are fun to do, no mater what brand! Attached Images

Reply:Dont worrie if you go to sticker heads they got one where the Jd is beatin up the Ih guy! LOL Heres Dannys Jd 110. I dug it out of a barn and I hated to sell it but when I lost my job we needed the money. I posted a pic of a weight bracket I did today for the 582. Also if you have iso mounts on that tractor, I cant remember, yo dont have to go to deere to get them. Get Moog sway bar bushings from car quest, same thing and a bunch cheaper! The loader is my current project. This is what I got the welder for to build atachments for my cubs. Attached Images
Reply:Nice. We are on our way to being farmers! Our site is always under construction so check back often for updates.  http://www.philosophyfarmstyle.com/
Reply:Vince...I sure would like to have got that 110 from ya !!!  What year was it?Sweeeet loader on the Cub!!
Reply:It was a 67. I sold it to a colector in Atl. That thing was perfect with original paint! Heres another one I sold a 140 with 3 port hyd. This was a one owner too. I did a valve job on it and some other work and the guy never came and got it. We kept it in the show room for over a year and my boss finally told me to sell it. I sold it to a guy down around southern Bama. I met him up here on the SC GA Line.Heres my blog site if you wanna check out some of the plow days Ive had and that Ive been to. I go to one in Pa on in Bama Tenn and I have one here. Theres like 3 pages of pics and 2 vid's. http://redneckplowday.blogspot.com/ Attached Images
Reply:The blog is great!!..neat stuff!...I like to see them young'uns getting into the old tractors, instead of sitting on a video game..they ought to ban them games. Nice 140!!
Reply:Thank you!
Reply:Hey Vince...Questions for ya.Is a Cub Cadet 109 any good?? Can it pull a plow or other equipment? ...or what model CC would be better for garden work (plow, etc.)?
Reply:Goat109 will do all you want it to do. Its a 10 hp with hydro tranny. My loader is a 129 12 hp and hydro. I prefer to plow with a gear drive, but I have 2 hydros and have plowed with the 129 many times. Big thing on the hydro is the trunion wears, but you can weld it back up. I use a 1/16th rod on 50 amps and mve quick! Too much heat will runin the seal. That 106 Im on has a 12 hp in it and I decked the block just even with the top of the piston, worked on the valves, not enough, and I have a lp head on it. If I dont run 110 octane it sounds like its going to throw a rod. Youll like the cub better than the 212. All the IH cub cadets are shaft driven with a ring and pinion rear end. Some of the rears will hold up to 100 hp befor they need to be worked. When you get into the red and super tractors thats where you get MTD built stuff. When they bought the lawn mower line from IH they started building the tranny out of alum insead of cast iron. Heres a good group of guys to get in with. http://www.cubcadetcollectors.com/forum/Stay away from the unoffical Ih cub cadet page. The guy that runs it is an ***. Also for your deere needs these guys are top notch.http://www.weekendfreedommachines.co...cus/discus.cgiThe 216 you got is a good tractor. If you get a chance try to get the 300 and 400 series. Also the 140 they are all shaft drive. Heres my next project ad it shows that junky alum rear end. Its a cc 1872 that Im going to put the loader on next winter with power steering.Youll see a pic of the trunion the square thing. sometimes they crack and most times they wear and you have to weld the corners and square it back up. theres 2 dampining springs in there. if you need more help you can email me at   [email protected]  Ill be happy to do what I can for ya. Reply:Thanks for the info man!! I want to get a CC to plow my garden with ..the JD 216 is a full restoration project and we do not want to use it as a daily worker. I like the CC's better for working. What are some of the CC gear drive models that I should be looking for..?? Looks like you have got yourself a good project going with the 1872. Keep us posted on your progress. Thanks again for the help. Have a good 'un!!Last edited by Goat Driver; 02-01-2011 at 08:06 AM.

Reply:BobFunny my kids are 8 and 6. My 8 yr old will run the tractors, put the loader into the side of the shed sunday, and fix them. My 6 yr old will just drive them and watch us fix them. The both like shooting guns. Also my wife worked in a body shop for years and she like to tape off. I dont. So when we paint one the whole family gets involved. But other than that, Kathy calls them junk! LOLGoatId say the wide frames, like 108 128 are good. Now if you can find you a 14 or 16 hp K series eng out of another cub, drop it in the gear drive and you be set. The wide frames are easier to work on. The narrow frames are more comon to find. I wouldnt drop below 10hp. Find you a 106 126 122 102 would be fine.A 149 hydro is my favorite hydro, Ive owned several, they have hydro lift, so it pulls the plow out of the ground with a finger!  remember the first two numbers are the horse power and the last number, even gear drive, odd hydro. I run a bule, about 500 to 600 psi on my 106. On Vinces 582, now thats a fun tractor, I run a 900 psi spring. Something is going to brake and Ill need to renforce the clutch area. This you tube vid is running the blue spring with the original 1967 10 hp eng. You can see how much faster my 106 is as I bump my friend Greg's 140. Also youll see me catch them too. Im in second gear 2/3 throtal. The only extra weight I have is 2 26lb IH wheel weights on it. The rest of my stuff I run water and antifreeze in my rear wheels plus sears plastic weights that are like 45 lbs. What part of MS are you in. The only place Ive been is Gulfport, and LOL The air force base on Fri and Sat nights! The air force had better looking ladies than the seabees! LOL Attached Images
Reply:Thank you again for the help and heads up on the models. Nice to see them boys in the shop and outside.   I can't keep my son in the house, he is either tinkering with a mower or hunting or fishing. I stopped mama from buying video games with the oldest one a long time ago,  one of the best things that we ever did.I live about 100 miles south of Memphis, TN right off of I-55. I lived in Gulfport for a couple of months, didn't like it...I 'm not the "beach" or "ocean" type. I drove an 18-wheeler for 15 years, so I have been all over the eastern US. I used to have to go to Middle Island, New York and come out of there over to a steel mill outside of Dayton, OH been through PA on I-78 and I-80..man that was 20 years ago..whew time flies Thanks again!
Reply:Love those "old" John Deere's and Cub Cadets. You can keep those new Garden Tractors with their cheap engines and stamped framesCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Kinda wish I still had it but on my ranch I use my big Johnny for everything... I've also got a smaller 970 but is not running right now.
