Pretty cool.  I leave the TV on for noise sometimes, and I just caught part of a news broadcast about Eastern Ohio and the Utica Shale Deposit.Long story short, the high school is teaching welding there, for the first time in 20 years, in anticipation of the new pipeline/mining type work.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:I wouldn't bank on any new oil or gas field development with the current crowd in the White House.
Reply:Oil/gas has been busy everywhere I have been.Constant Current Weldor.

Reply:Some etntiy is purchacing a lot of radio time to advertise the use of local companies for the largest jobs.  I figured that was for the electric generation going at the locks on the Ohio river but perhaps these piplines are part of the target.I had the tv on cspan and they had an ohio senate candidate debate and it came out Ohio has passed a law requiring disclosure of all the chemicals used in frackig.  If you have a disposal well in your county and see the truck traffic it is hard to know what to think.I think it is the Marcelius shale currently over here the Utica is deeper and probably thicker under Ohio.  I did drive by a pipeline going in probably 12 to 18 inch diameter near Rt 50 in Doodridge county.I also think this is gas, havn't figured out how these new sites work but all the rocking pump things are on old wells not these new sites.  The pipelines are gas pipelines if there is oil it is collected in tanks and trucked.  I think a lot of the tanks end up with brine more than oil.  Correct me if I am wrong,  I have a four inch gas collection pipline with meter sites going across me dating to the late seventies early eighties.fran
Reply:Originally Posted by DSWMaybe, maybe not. Around here the public tech schools "compete" for students. They have to sell their programs to kids and parents. No kids interested, no program... The last tech school in the area just shut down their machining class this summer. All last year they had zero students, and paid the instructor to pretty much do almost nothing to complete their commitment to him. I was talking Thursday night to the guy who manages the night program at the tech school I help out at. He works nights there, and days at the other school. I asked if they'd completed the gutting of the machine shop over the summer. He said they had and it was a shame to see all the tooling go. If he'd the money for the tools, and a place to put them, he'd have opened his own school. The night program has a waiting list of older guys who are interested in the program. At the job fair they run, almost 1/2 the companies were looking for machinists. Machining however isn't glamorous or in the news, so the engineering program got the machine shop space so the computer lab could expand some more.  Diesel shop went in the last renovation as well.

Reply:Actually I was speaking of the high school level tech schools here. They've taken out almost all of the vocational programs from the "standard" high schools and put them all in just one or two schools in the county. The kids attend a 1/2 day at the tech school in whatever program the are learning, Plumbing/HVAC, Electrical, Welding, Protective Services ( fire and security), Carpentry, Landscaping, Welding, Food services and so on. Most schools also offer night programs as well to adults in several of the programs. The "real" high schools only concentrate on college prep. The tech schools usually end up as dumping grounds for misfits, druggies and slackers many times. " You can't make it to college with your grades, so we suggest you go to the tech school and at least learn a trade..."  It really hurts those few "dedicated" students who have a real passion and interest for the programs..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:I graduated high school 05, and we had no voc classes at all. I would've taken a welding class then if I could have. I've taken some at CCs since (and am in a Civil Engineering program at an excellent school right now), but have looked around for machining courses and haven't found any of those either. Too bad.Lincoln 175HD
Reply:I graduated in 2011 from a career tech school for welding. I loved it they told us our sophomore year at our home school about it and I was dead set on going. I made sure I had all the credits I needed to go and I went. My junior year I watched a lot of people drop out of the class they couldn't handle the work. The school really tried to  prepare us for the for the real world and I think they did a good job at it.My senior year they helped me get a job half way through the year and I got out on job placement I just went to work instead of school and still got a grade. I still have that same job am I'm doing grate I realize I still have lots to learn but the school played a big part in teaching me a skill that I will always have and can make a good livening doing. I have ran into a couple of the kids that dropped out and they wished they would have stayed with it. When I first went to the school every one back at my home school looked at me different like I wasn't good enough so I had to go to another school but they now know why and most now wish they would have but at that time it "wasn't cool enough" for them. Most thought they was better than me and now i make more money and have a steddy full time job and they dont.trailblazer 302 spoolmatic 25a with wc-24thermal arc 161s tig rigmillermatic 200dialarc 250 hf tig rig with spool gun and boxand wanting more......

Reply:The high school in this town has ag and shop, this part of the world seems to lag about 10years,compared to the coasts. The metal shop is Miller welder land and almost all of the boys will take some welding classes.I showed my boys how to weld when they were in grade school, the oldest liked stick, the younger likes mig.We seem to be heading toward a population that doesn't know how to do anything with any sort of tool. I keep hearing about rebuilding civilization if a disaster hits.Is there an App for that ?

They actually learn a lot more than most people think. It's more than just building a bird house. You learn basic fab skills and an understanding of using at least basic tools like a drill and screwdriver, order of operations, budgeting, measuring, layout, safety, responsibility,  how to adapt to problems and errors ( like when you F up and cut a piece to small). We also had to manufacture and market a product in our Shop II class, so we had to learn advertising, how to maximize materials to minimize waste and cost. We were introduced to wood, metal and plastics and had to do a project in all three areas.

Reply:Gas pipelines going in around here, with the pipe and the pumping stations there must be a lot of welding to be done.Must have been around a dozen welding rigs Friday morning at the local gas and go.
