I have seen some people just do a series of tacks to make their welds look like stacked dimes. Is this safe as far as strength?

Reply:About the only use for that technique is welding very thin sheet metal. Mig is notorious for cold starts, You end up with a bunch of places where cracks can start and areas with poor fusion if you try to do that with heavier material. A series of tacks is just a weld waiting to fail, and thety usually do fairly quickly if loaded to any great extent. I don't know why so many people want to try and make mig welds look like some thing  they aren't. 1st learn to make good solid welds, every time. Then when you have the experience, you can start playing with the puddle to get the visual results you want, while still getting a decent weld..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I don't do this by all means. My buddy argued with me about this. I can make them without having to do this procedure

Reply:On thin metal such as car bodies some peolpe mistake a stitch weld for a dime step.  Often small short welds applied to different ares of the joint can help with thin plate, this is not s step weld which is actually a contiuous weld laid out in small over lapping circles.
Reply:This remind me of the fabulous thread ''Mig like TIG'' in the welding section, to me i can't give you any accurate advice on the strenght of those fancy looking weld, but if i was working on important strenght job (structural, pipeline) i think you can judge by yourself and NOT choose to try fancy MIG weld haha, but in my work sometime i use this method to make the weld look better in tight space where i cannot grind!Calculator > Bevel Square
