Today was my third session of welding class. I've posted first day results here.First fusion welds. Oxyacetylene with #3 tip, 1.5# acetylene & 1.5# oxygen.First and third welds. The top one has filler rod since I misunderstood the instructions; the bottom one used no filler rod.Second weld (other side of same workpiece)Here's my first set of beads with filler rod (R45), same oxygen & acetylene pressure as above.First setSecond setIt's tough to get a uniform weld speed, but hopefully that will come with experience.I'd appreciate any commentary on the photos - I can use all the help I can get. Thanks!
Reply:looks good yep work on speed and distance next time hit it with grinder clean off the mill scalelearning to add filler to cool down puddle, is yes practice practice .......idealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:I agree with the first comment. But use a sanding disk or flap wheel. NOT a grinder. A grinder is way too rough.Get the weld area to clean shinny metal first and your welds will ALWAYS be easier and look better. If you count as you add the filler wire it will give you consistancy.Like a musician. 1.2.3.4...1.2.3.4.....etc.,.What you are doing with O/A prepares you to be a good TIG welder.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:let the puddle grow a bit before you put the rod into it..
Reply:What is ment by 1.5# ac and 1.5# oxy? Ive never done this so I dont know and understand the numbers.

Reply:those look mighty good to me!! you're on your way to a good torch welder. just keep practicing. as you progress keep working down to thinner metal. mikeOl' Stonebreaker "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:I missed posting last week, so here are a few from today.Lap joint, oxyacetylene, with R45 filler rod. The top joint is ugly since I had too much heat on the upper plate & melted the edge. I think the bottom one looks OK.T-joint, first ones I've done. There's a lot of scale but I couldn't seem to get much off with a wire brush, & I didn't have a grinder in my bag. This one has some undercut, but the instructor says it's better to work on the hot side than the cold side. That way you avoid a cold joint. I'm still figuring out managing the cone, the rod, & travel speed.I can see how this takes a LOT of practice.
Reply:man ya really need to invest in a cheap grinder 14-19 buck one and a flap wheelgota get rid of the scale .. a wire wheel only polishes it but they are looking better ....(((metal prep has a lot to do with the end result of the weld)))idealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:Looks to me like you've got what it takes to make it. Stick with it, and learn from the best. What I mean is, when you get to the field some day.... find some guys that you think are making the best welds on site. Then ask them if you can watch them weld. Some may be receptive, some may not. Don't worry about the ones that won't let you watch them. Anyway, from that you will eventually form your own style, or your own "signature" bead(s). Top gun welders can make a damn good living. For instance, I'll bet that guys like SlowHand, and many others on here live very comfortably (as they should) because of their incredible welding talent.
Reply:Good welds for beginer. You can try smaller filler rod and increase travel speed. Use 1-2mm nozzle. Like in Tig welding you need to keep flame close to the metal to keep heat concetrated. |
