I am looking to bid on a job and in the spec's sheet, it states: "Qualifyproceduresandpersonnel according to AWS D1.1/D1.1M, "Structural Welding Code - Steel."Does this mean I have to have a AWS D1.1 cert or just paper work showing my business have qualified our welders to D1.1 standards? The spec's do state under Submittals "Welding Certificates".
Reply:The spec sheet says qualify procedures and personnel.  Procedures = how to weld Personnel  = WeldersCant qualify welders without qualifying procedures. Good thing about D1.1 it has pre qualified procedures you can just type up, if the joint, material, or process doesn't work for clause 3 u can qualify to clause 4. Clause 3.1 All prequalified WPS's shall be written. (Says basically the same thing in 4.2.1) for clause 4.   4.2.1.2 you can use other procedures if the engineer accepts them basically u can use SWPS. Your question doesn't make since. "Does this mean I have to have a AWS D1.1 cert or just paper work showing my business have qualified our welders to D1.1 standards?"If you qualified your welders to D1.1 then u should have had a WPS written, if it wasn't Written, u didn't qualify the welders to D1.1. The certification is nothing more than the welder qualifying to the procedure, either pre qualified or qualified through testing of clause 4. Clause 1.4.2 The contractor shall be responsible for wps qualification of welding personnel, the contractors inspection, and performing work in conformance with the requirements of this code and contract documents. Heres the thing, if u dont understand it, find someone who does. Dont fake the paperwork, it will bite u in the ***, whether it as soon as payment, 3rd party inspection, audits, or farther down the line with an issue. Purchase D1.1 and use it while your working. How can a contractor say oh its D1.1, without a D1.1 code book?Anyone can certify anyone to D1.1 with engineers approval, it does not half to be a CWI, but it does half to be someone with proper training and acceptance of the engineer as outline in the contract documents. 6.1.4.1 basis for qualification.I forgot how to change this.
Reply:Is this the first time you have ran into this?  Its not a big deal at all, just be prepared to submit papers for anyone who is welding on site.  That's only if they are real sticklers for the spec, I only get asked for papers about half of the time and I don't think I've ever had a GC ask for papers for every welder I had on site.  I submit my papers for everything. The only exception is State Highway work around here, they want current (within 6 months) AWS D1.1 papers for anyone on the job.I wouldn't lose sleep over it.  If you start nit picking the spec and reading all the fine print, you'll quickly want a different career lol.  You're time would be better spent researching lien laws for when these **********s can't/won't pay you.Last edited by OldSchoolPSD; 10-26-2012 at 03:29 AM.Beck's Welding and Fabrication, Inc.-Misc.
