I need to build about 300' more of pipe fences. In the past I have used sucker rod but am considering other options. These fences are mainly holding pens that won't have the pressure on it that a corral fence doesWhat do you think of using  3/8" or 1/2" rebar? It's 1/3 to half the price of new (seconds) sucker rod. I put my line posts at 8' intervals and use 6 horizontal bars.My other option is to weld  1/4" thick cattle panels to the pipe fence but with 8' between the line posts I expect them to be flimsy. Plus if a cow hits one and bend it or tears it up its a big job to replace it.I could also go with bull panels but they are $50 vs. $28.00 for a cattle panelFor a 16' section of fence I figure my costs to be (not including the line posts or top rail or concrete:3/4" sucker rod    $69.305x16' bull panel    $50.001/4x 52x16' cattle panel $28.001/2" rebar                $32.94
Reply:A lot of this will depend highly on your design plan. Some sort of pict as to what you are thinking would help. Not all rebar welds well. Some rebar is very brittle when welded and won't take any stress before the welds tear out. Weldable rebar is usually much more expensive than the "standard" rebar which may or may not weld well. Much of the generic rebar is all remelt scrap and all it needs to do is meet minimum tensile strengths. Weldability can vary from batch to batch or even rod to rod in the same lot or section of bar.$32 sounds like it might be a bit high for bar, but not knowing the design it's hard to say. It's been quite a while since I needed to buy any, but when we'd get full bundles from the concrete supply house, bar was way cheaper than the stuff you usually by at the home centers..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:It's just a standard pipe fence. 2 3/8" line post and top rail (schedule 40) with the rebar or sucker rods welded to the face of the pipes. I use 6 horizontal pieces. The rebar from my metal supplier is3/8" x 20' $3.091/2"x20   $5.495/8" x 20     $8.49Speaking of hardness the sucker rods I would assume are lots harder than rebar. A lot of guys have started welding clips over the sucker rod instead of welding the rod to the pipe due to cracking of the welds. You are right that we don't know the quality of the rebar. Probably made in Mexico of any junk that they can find. Thanks
Reply:I'd have to call my old supplier to see what the current pricing is for rebar. You might make a few calls to concrete supply companies vs standard steel yards. My concrete supplier ( VIMCO) kept about 6-8 truckloads of #3, #4 and #5 on hand for each size as well as probably 2-3 truckloads of #8 and larger. Cost was usually cheaper than other places we tried. Of course to get the best prices, you had to buy full bundles ( I forget how much bar was to a bundle in each size. For some reason I'm thinking 100 pcs in a bundle of #4 ( 1/2") ) They are a pretty big company, so your experience may vary depending where you are at..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
