Ford ZF5 weldable?

I'm searching for a 7.3 diesel donor truck to transplant into an older truck and came across a good deal on a wrecked 96. The truck went off the road and drove sideways into a tree and twisted the frame in the center (real bad). The only drivetrain damage was the starter got whacked off and took a chunk of the bellhousing with it (just immediately around the starter). The bellhousing is integral to the transmission (one peice construction) so unless it's weldable the transmission needs replacing. I've done a search on used transmissions and people are asking what I'm paying for the whole truck!

The later cases have big time porosity--more thanthe older ones (which makes them more fragile), takes more time to dealwith the porosity.When things break, the casting first stretches and distorts, finally breaking.Getting good starter alignment, a really flat, square and perpendicularflange mounting surface can be tough. The starter mount holes may bejacked as well.On crashed vehicles, there often is hidden damage in the casesthat isn't discovered until the case is removed from the vehicle--cracks,broken bosses, ripped out tapped holes, etc. This is more the casethan not, in my experience.Blackbird

Reply:Thanks for all the quick replies!Turk, I'm not 100% sure. I haven't gone to look at the truck yet becasue it's a couple hours away from me. I did have the seller take a picture of the damage and send it to me. What does this look like to you; adapter or transmission? Attached Images
