This is going to be one of those newbie -which welder to buyquestions, but hope the pros can bear with me I've done little REL welding on a machine borrowedfrom a neighbor and would like to step-up to somethingwhich produces higher quality finish off the gun so to speak(main use will be supporting woodworking hobby - jig/table etc.building in steel, stainless and probably in alu, round the houserepairs and artistic work (small to medium sized items). My initial thought was on a AC/DC TIG but wanted to askwhether a MIG/REL/TIG combo machine like this EWM welder:http://liveadmin.ewm.de/cms/8125/en/index.htmlwould cover the needs at a lower cost / is an AC/DC tiga better solution / can do more with it / be it maybe a bitmore difficult to master (not sure if the EWM weldercuts corners on functionality to get the 3 types ofwelding as I haven't enough experience to knowwhat is needed)?
Reply:Rambled thru the link above, to the mfg's. link....which gives some but not really inclusive detailsabout this machine. It's German and whatever the price is--will reflect that.(My own interest in this machine is piqued, since it has a min. of 5 amps in MIGand is pulsed inverter technology.)1-This is a DC TIG/MIG unit only.        ????what is REL welding?2-The selection of a machine needs to focus on your requirements regarding the thicknesses of various materials, types of joints, forms of construction- just what you expect from a machine-and your yet-to-be-acquired skill level.[However, since this forum is being told repeatedly by new entrantsthat no form of welding requires a substantial amount of time, practice, training or experience........(because watching one that 'can do' makeswelding 'look' too easy.) ----Let's forego any silly discusion about the experience part, which results in bruised egos.]Blackbird
Reply:Following Dave's comment I'd ask: Where are you? Does your location/power restriction preclude using typical multi-process welders (think Miller/ESAB/Lincoln)?  What is REL welding?ScottMiller XMT 350 CC/CV w/gas solenoid opt.Miller S-22A wirefeederBernard 400A "Q" gunMiller Spoolmatic 30A / WC-24C-K 200A torch/gas lensWeldcraft WC-18 watercooled torchHypertherm Powermax 30Victor O/A
Reply:feedback is much appreciated !I'm in Croatia and power is no problem - have singleand three phase power in the house. With your input and further reading, I've settledon getting an AC/DC TIG around 200A .As all the work will be for hobby, unless my artisticand other talents don't change this, my banker (conscience)is at the moment sitting on the fence regarding buyinga new chinese or brand TIG (still also fighting with old lessonslearned of better being sad once than ever day and not wanting something that doesn't perform every timeespecially when learning) .Anyway, could someone name the main functions the TIGshould have or a "representative model" - I know every daynew functionality is coming out but not sure whichfunctions would make the welding simplest (maybe I'm askingstupid questions but without experience it's like not knowinghow wet water is ).
