A friend gave me a old tank and was wanting me to make him a smoker with it but it has some kind of liner in it, Seems to crack if hit really hard and looks like melted glass if welded from the outside. any ideas on what it might be and a way to get it out?   Ill get some pics of it soon.
Reply:Its called epoxy coating - we use it in tanks at work -it helps with rust and keeps air cleanercostly to have doneThe main thing is not to panic or get excited Bobcat 250, X-Treme 12VS,  MM211Meltabo, Milwaukee,Porter Cable,Dewalt,MakitaVictor O/A, Ingersoll-RandEvolution Rage2, 40 amp PlasmaLincoln 225 AC/DC
Reply:burn it, as hot as you possibly can. If it doesn't come out, thats fine because when you're actually smoking you're never going to get near those temps and  thus not going to pick up anything from it.There are no problems. Reply:IIRC, yrs ago they lined some hot water tanks and well pressure tanks w/ glass.                                                    MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Sounds like Thors is trying to put someone 6' under with that comment.
Reply:no, I'm not, Not everyone has a sand blaster. but everyone can make a hot fire. the hot fire will burn off anything that could cause a problem at any temp that a smoker will be at. More than likely it's a porcelain or glass liner, neither of which will cause issues. any residue from what ever was in the tank will be burned off, and what remains will need a higher melting/flash temp than a smoker will produce. The food will not be on the sides of the smoker it will be on a grill so there won't be any direct transfer. People make smokers and grills out of all kinds of tanks. fuel tanks, water tanks, etc. you can spend the extra money and time cleaning it out or you can do what most people do and just burn it good and start cooking. There are no problems. Reply:Would acetone to loosen it then flap disc work or no?
Reply:W/o seeing it, I have to agree w/ Thor. If you decide to grind it out, use breathing protection 'cause glass is made from silica.                                     MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:here are a few pics my buddy sent me of the inside of the tank. One pic you can see he welded on the outside and the inside melted Attached Images
Reply:You have not mentioned what the tank was used for originally. That might be helpful knowledge to have in this case to determine what the liner might be. If you don't know for sure, at least post a photo of the entire tank so we can see what it is you are trying to work with.
Reply:Give it a couple good whacks with a hammer.  If it shatters and flies off it's a porcelain coating, in which case, I'd avoid it like the plague.  There's no way to cleanly remove all the porcelain coating without having tens of thousands of razor sharp glass shards everywhere.  You can't scrape it off, grind it off, sand blast it off, nothing, without having a terrible mess to clean up.If it appears to be plastic, it's no doubt an epoxy, meant to seal the tank and protect it from corrosion, in which case, I'd avoid it like the plague.  I'm gonna venture to guess water heater tank? You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Ya I just told it would be easier to buy some 1/4 pipe and make a smoker out of that then spend the time getting the liner out, and it was to big for a water heater im guessing fuel tank.thanks for the input guys
