As a hobbyist, I always think its cool when I come across stuff I have not seen before.  Such a these big tungstensAttachment 223701What exactly do you weld with a 1/4" Tungsten and at what amperage?. Reply:I dunno. According to my Precision Tig 275 and per the Precision Tig 375, they say the 1/8" is good for DC- up to maximum amps. That would be 340amps for my precision tig 275. and 420amps for the PT375!  It says 250amps for AC. So I would assume you could go up to 1/4 above those amperages? That is impressive. And I can see the use for it. I have splintered out my tungsten when doing aluminum with 1/8" many times. But what really impresses me is the opposite end of the spectrum. My machine lists tungsten use at .010" for below 15amps. That is crazy. I wanna try that!Last edited by Joker11; 09-02-2012 at 09:29 PM.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:Old joe who taught me about tig welding had tig torches that used those They looked like a short shotgun with a big nozzle (cup) and hoses and cables out the back and were connected to a big GE power supply ..looked like a power transformer which it was they were 500 or 600 amp supplies if i remember right only seen them run once along with the atomic hydrogen welding machineBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:You could weld aluminum DCEP. The electrode needs to be much bigger for this than DCEN, though I don't recall how much bigger.

Reply:How do you handle that? I mean, even at 250amps, with a water cooled torch, my hands get warm just from the reflected heat. I can not imagine 600 to 1000amps! wow.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:@_@ Might have been used for automated welding of thick aluminum plate before aluminum MIG was common. I've dealt with some automated dual shield applications of more than 500 amps and believe me you don't don't wanna get too close to that.

Reply:Wish I had some of that 1/4 stuff sometimes. I run a squarewave 275 but if it is cranked up to 315 in AC the 5/32 will ball up and then the ball starts jumping around and flys off. Also breaks a lot of nozzles from the heat. Just glad I dont do big aluminum all the time.Lincolin Power Wave 450, Lincoln Powermig 255, Lincoln Pro Mig 140, Lincoln Squarewave Tig 275, Miller Big 40 G(with Hobart Hefty suitcase), Thermal Arc 95S and Esab PCM875 in an already full machine shop.
Reply:Back in the day, our ion implanters used tungsten of that size in the ion source. Ours however, were always green banded pure tungsten. Later designs had the tungsten in a loop that didn't traverse the arc chamber like the straight ones did.All this to say that you might run across some green banded tungstens that were thrown out like ours were after the conversion to new style arc chambers.PapaLincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175
