I'm going to hire a private TIG teacher to train me and my guys to weld 1/16th thin aluminum 1x1" square tube at my shop. I kind of live out in the country and I'm a decent drive away from most people so I don't want to waste their time. should I ask them if they are certified? If you were to teach absolute beginners what would your course of action be? Teach for an hr, practice for an hr, how many days? etc?thanks!
Reply:What are you building? You have chosen one of the hardest welding tasks to learn. Reply:First I would want a resume of their own training and experience. second ask to see some of their work or have them do a demo of their work for you.. as u r looking to make a significant investment in training, they should have no problem coming to do a demo for you. Also contact the instructors at the local college and ask them if they would be interested in teaching your staff at your facility.. Most college instructors only teach part time anyway. they usually make about $40-75/hr. If you offer them the same I think that is reasonable. Practice is the key so make sure to figure in practice time for each employee during their work hours...establish a relationship with one of the LWS and see about a short term lease of extra machines. a few smaller inverters would probably work. 5 guys trying to get instruction on 1 machine ain't gonna work to well. I will get flamed for this but I believe even Longevity and Everlast have lease programs. for what u need, just lease a few 200 or 250 amp AC/DC tig machines for a few months. If you have dedicated and interested employees, they can even take the Inverters home for practicing. get on of the dual voltage machines like a 200sx or 185micro from the sponsors or go for renting dynasty or TA or Invertec machine. you can rent bottles from the LWS too..Last edited by soutthpaw; 11-26-2012 at 09:38 AM.Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:@soutthpaw: Ok, thanks for the tips. @[email protected]: I am basically making rectangular aluminum frames 2x3' in size for a portable photobooth. No structural concerns to worry about.
Reply:Ask him if he is familliar with your Lincoln. Ask him to run some samples on machine like a weld test and introduce him to your crew. If he passes your quality expectations, hire him week to week spending one on one with you and your crew.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea. |
