i wanted a receiver tube system for a vise, didnt want to pay about $20 for the tubes that match..was planning to fab a receiver from two pieces of angle . then i realized that my table which is framed in 4 x 1/2 angle, already had half a tube there. i welded a piece of angle to the existing one and my receiver tube was done. theres a little slop between the tubes(3/16 or so)  when i insert the vise, but thats fine, and when i tighten it up nothing moves at all.. Reply:What kinda vise is that. I need to get a bigger one and really dont know what to look for. Just for making stuff around the house for my tractors.
Reply:irwin,,homedepot $80.....aint ductile iron like a wilton but it aint bad..5", revolves and rotates, replaceable jaws...
Reply:Not knowing what ductile iron is, what is it? Thanks I can aford that!

Reply:the reason i mention it is when i did a little research before buying the chinese vise, i looked at wiltons site..obviously for a $ 400 difference theres gonna be differences,, biggest i could see is that wilton makes there body from ductile, i never  intended to use my vise as an anvil so i decided i would be okay with the irwin..if you look in my 4th foto the reabar is leaning up against my " anvil ", theres a piece of railroad track welded on there, you can only see the bottom flange of it.. so my vise didnt need tobe ductile iron..they make ductile iron pipe for water mains.. i have seen a large excavator hit such pipe and the teeth  will punch into the pipe and the wall will conform to the shap eof the tooth and not crack.. toa  limit....
Reply:looks like ya need to work on your welds rather than looking for new tools i have no doubt the vice will stand up to some force but may  be careful of the welds on your angle iron that would be a big hurt on your toes if it came off  i know it took me a lot of years to perfect my welds as it does every one sorry  if i came off as offencive  not trying to just trying to give some advice is all good luck with welding you will get it  one day  practice makes perfect.Lincoln Pro Core 125Lincolin sp 100Miller Big 40Lincoln Idealarc SP250miller matic 212http://www.facebook.com/hdwelding?sk=wallwww.hdweldingbeds.com

Reply:Well, I see he's got the duct tape handy in case the welds don't hold. They're not purdy, but I bet they're burned in plenty.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:mr heimbuck i appreciate the  spirit of yer comment.. this was the first beads i ever  did what id call horizontal overhead..i know i got some 6010  into the other side and the 1/8 7018 over that went in at 125 amps..i wouldnt want me welding steam pipe, but this is uglier than it is weak...sundown that duct tape was to hold some little pieces of tiewire in place when i clamped it up so i had some gap..i'm thinkin  probably 1/16 there was not enough probly 3/32 was better choice..norite i was originally gonna  do just that until i realized i had one angle there already..i wish a good sliding fit was that easy....too much slop, just throw in a shoprag i guess...

Reply:That looks like an exact copy of the Wilton on my bench in the garage (I really did think it was the same vice). As for breaking these things... My grandfather had a very large bench vice with a "slide" that was roughly 2x5" (give or take a bit). It looked to be a very stout vice. My father wound up with it after my grandfather passed away. One day I tried to use it to change U-joints in a GM driveshaft (the ones with the injected nylon lock rings) using a big nut (to press) and a large socket as a receiver (I was pretty young at the time). I used a hammer (on the handle of the vice) and was trying to get the vice tight enough to press that U-joint out. BOOM!!! I broke the slide right at the base of the front jaw. Granted, I now realize that I likely should have broken that vice, but it seemed impossible to my young self that this thing was anything but the fabled "immovable object". Dad now likes to remind me that he's sure that I can destroy an anvil with a rubber mallet.KevinHobart Handler 210Tweco Fabricator 181iLincoln Squarewave Tig 175
Reply:i cannot imagine why so many vices come with a flat spot("anvil") to invite someone to beat the piss out of the vise...it is not a logical combination of tools to be in one piece...
Reply:At least if they have a flat spot, that will move some folks away from just pounding away on top of the vise jaws...  It'll last a little longer if you're smashing down on the body of the vise, rather than the top of the vise jaws.Maybe it's like the big red button you're not ever supposed to push....Bang, BANG, BANG!!, snap!  Oh, time to buy a new vise....must have hit the self-destruct switch...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Yea, I only paid about $90 or so (maybe just over $100?, but I don't think it was that high) for the Wilton I'm using. I wouldn't be too surprised to find out that it's actually the Irwin vice (or that they are the same). It's not a high end Wilton, but it's what I needed at the time I bought it, so it followed me home. It's been excellent so far...KevinHobart Handler 210Tweco Fabricator 181iLincoln Squarewave Tig 175
Reply:I think those welds are fine…..unless the welds are for sale or in a shop that makes coin. The T handle bolt is something I am trying to get away from. To many times I have ripped a hole in a new or used pair of jeans. Though the T handle is easy….and I like easy….I simply cut a piece of small pipe and put the T handle inside it. I hate buying work pants….If you can cold bend #5 bar in a vice, it is worth $80.00.I gave a HF vise a try.. broke twice~ off to the scrap pile. I did strip it of the two sliding T handles.Classic 1D 200SAE 30086 SA 200Hyperthem 45Jancy Mag Force O/A Victor-GossCable's remote2-12" Mathey Dearman bevelersLN 25Miller Auto Set 211Wendy's Pancake/Jackson PipelinerNew Holland LS 180Great story man....tell it again!

Reply:WeldbeadIm glad you posted a pic of the ranger, as I was going to post a question, and dont mean to hijack your thread. In that stick control setting do I need to turn that to 10 every time I go to use my grinder? When you move the control setting, are you changing the amps? Like a lot more, 10   and a lot less on 1?
Reply:q1  i believe soq2  stick range starts at 5, so i figure  6-10(5 ranges) account for 100% of the 50 amps in this setting(from125 to 175) , so you start at 125 amps and each of the 5 ranges is worth 10 amps..so set at 85  in the foto it is 125 amps plus 85% of the 50 , or about 167  .....
Reply:weldbeadI read the manual toninght and it just says fine setting. Didnt give a break down, makes me wonder. Any way I did some real thin stuff last night on 50A and turned it on 5 and had to bump it to 7 using a 1/16 rod.I dont use them but to weld up clutch arms on my tractors. Worked well as always.
Reply:i didnt find a lot in the manual./. seems like the 5 setting is around zero...Thank you
