Am I the only one who has noticed a soapy taste in their mouth after welding with 7018? What's that all about?!
Reply:Your mouth is too close to the bathtub.__________________________________________________  _I could not care less where anything is made. I don't fall for the myth that locally made is 'better'. If I think something is good value for ME, I'll buy it. That said, I do like European quality

Reply:Never noticed 7018 tasting like soap.  I've  used  some  6013 that had a pleasant laundry detergent smell.

Reply:I just can't imagine how much 7018 I've run in my life, especially before Innershield came out. But never tasted soap! Use to run a lot of Mig inside stainless steel tanks, at the end of the day I'd run my tongue over my front teeth, they would taste just like a spoon.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Originally Posted by joshuabardwellI didn't think that any special precaution was necessary unless I was working in an enclosed environment. I mean, what do the pros do? You guys work outside all day long burning rods and you're not wearing respirators, are your?
Reply:... also, I happen to own a 3M half-face respirator with some 60926 filters ("multi gas / vapor"). Would this be effective at protecting against welding fumes if I wore it under my hood?
Reply:Seriously there are many times guys simply don't wear the PPE they probably should. how many times have you seen posts here that show guys welding in short sleeve shirts, or with no gloves? UV light is proven to be a cause of skin cancer, yet they choose not to wear protection.I know I've worked on quite a few jobs where other guys don't feel the need to were a respirator/mask to protect themselves from dust/dirt etc. Many times I personally won't take that risk. I keep my own masks on the truck and they are good top quality ones at that that aren't inexpensive. If I'm going to be blowing black snotters out of my nose, I probably will be putting on a mask or respirator. That said, I'll admit there are probably times that I should be wearing more PPE than I do. The "I'll only be doing this for a few minutes...", "It won't hurt if I don't use that today..." or the " Crap I forgot/ am out of my ---------, guess I'll just have to make do..." I try very hard not to do things like this. Long term exposure is tough to quantify on a short term basis. By the time it all adds up, it's way too late to do much about it.I know I have partial hearing loss from not wearing hearing protection on one job years ago. Looking back on that I know I F'd up. I knew better even if at that time PPE wasn't as big a deal as it is today, but it was clumsy and uncomfortable and I figured I'd just deal with it, it wouldn't hurt... Now I can clearly see that it did, and I try very hard not to make the same mistakes now that I did then.Obvious signs something is different or not right, is usually a warning sign that you may need to be taking preventative measures. I occasionally see guys at night  in the tech school welding classes who choose to wear masks. I can't say I blame them, and I've thought any number of times that it probably would be a good thing for me to do as well even if I'm not welding. If I have to do a lot of grinding, then I almost always break out a mask from the truck.  A few times other students want to poke fun at the guys wearing masks. I always tell them that if he feels he needs to protect himself, that's his choice, and that they need to back off if it gets to harsh. Most get the point of PPE and don't give anyone a hard time over things like this, but just like here, most still give them a good natured ribbing for the fun of it.In the end only you can weigh the pluses and minuses and make the choice if you feel the need to wear one.EDIT:I'd have to check the 3M info on that filter. I know the P100 round pink ones I use are suggested for welding and metal pouring. Keep in mind god fit is important if you want to get the most from any respirator. Guys like me with full beards ( and you if that's you in the pict) won't get a good seal unless you trim the beard back.Last edited by DSW; 12-12-2012 at 12:34 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Originally Posted by joshuabardwellNo. I'm aware of that risk, but it never hurts to ask. Just for kicks, I sniffed the 7018 rods when they weren't burning, and they just smell soapy.
