Root too WIDE? (API 1104 - downhill pipeline welding)

Took a test last week on a 6" pipe.  It looked awesome but was failed because the root was too wide.  Can someone point me to where root width is discussed in API 1104??Thanks
Reply:What were the parameters for the test you took? What was your pipe size, gap, land, rod and amps?
Reply:don't think there is any specs for the root in 1104, you can run a 3/32 or a 3/16 if really wanted to (if there is a procedure for it). you'll end up with 3/16 of space on big pipe from time to time and you just gotta deal with it. if they busted you for too wide of a bead (not undercut, and not concave) then they just had it out for ya or they don't know what they are doing. IMO
Reply:Well......... When you ran the root in were you just pushing the rod in and lettin' it eat?....... OR... were you "stepping" back and forth to fill the gap?Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.

Reply:those pipeline inspectors will bust you out if you have the wrong kind of hood, they don't like the looks of your truck or machine, or if they rolled out on the wrong side of the bed that morning. You can't do anything about it but find another test to take.
