Hello all. I will be fabricating rigging and cage for my airboat project out of 1/2" and 3/4" EMT. My question is(and I did a search and could not find what i was looking for) what brazing rods do you recommend for EMT? I plan to soft pad the joints to remove the zinc coating. Being this stuff is so thin, can I use a small bottle with the torch attachment? Or is acetylene recommended for a better tie in?
Reply:why not just use tubing?
Reply:i had the same question EMT is weak stuff you can get Tube in the same sizes from your steel supplierMiller Xmt 350Lincoln Ln-25Ahp 200xSmith Gas Mixer AR/HTig is my Kung FuThrowing down dimes and weaving aboutInstagram http://instagram.com/[email protected]
Reply:Weight is why. I am powering my boat with a small engine. A Lycoming O 235 C1 to be exact. Airboat builders have used EMT for a long time. It is plenty strong enough for what I am doing.
Reply:I'm not asking for opinions. I want to know what is the best brazing rod for EMT conduit. Thanks.
Reply:I'd see if you can buy one of the small cans of brazing flux and buy 1/8" bare rod. Just heat the end of the bare rod and dip it in the flux. I've never tried brazing w/ oxy/propane but I know oxy/acet will work good. Use a small tip w/ very low flame. Reply:Kajun - do you have the access to a Mig. We build a lot of Lock-on deer stands and tree sticks with EMT and i weld them all with wire. Sand the area i plan to weld with a sanding pad on 4" grinder. I know you have vibration to consider as well , but wire will be fine . Are you planning on welding each run onto a flat bar / plate to bolt on and remove easily? A metal hole saw in a drill press will make coping the ends on bracing quick and accurate as well. We normally use Blu-Mole brand , but if you use wax on the teeth about any brand will do fine. What size prop and how many blades you going to be turning?
