These are the first tig tries with "Today's Score!" from Sunday. Unfortunately my HF AD helmet took a crap just when I am going to try tig, so I used the old trusty Jackson regular. Remember, I "touched" on tig back in college about twenty years ago. All were done with 1/16" 2% thoriated tungsten, gas lens, #4 cup, DCEN and 17CFH 100% argon.First tries were @ 90A, I thought was too hot.So I flipped the coupon over and turned it down to approx 75A ( I keep forgetting to look and keep tract)"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:When that coupon was done I decided to try a lap weld. The finished product had a very dull grayish color. All filler rod was 1/16" E70S-2, and it kinda looked like some silicon islands and some maybe tungsten contamination. Sorry the pics aren't the best."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Are you doing this inside or outside?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Clean your work. Dullness indicates too much heat. Start by taking away all the variables. The more things that stay the same, the easier time you will have troubleshooting. Your gas and heat seem alright, but I might use a 5 or 6 cup, not that it matters too terribly much. Just keep at it.A 4 cup running 19 cfh might be too much, turn gas down or get bigger cup. You want "soft" coverage. I see many welders pull contaminates into their weld this way.Last edited by WHughes; 04-13-2010 at 08:17 PM.UA Local 598
Reply:Whats a good general cfh setting? I just got my flowmeter and I had it set up running 30 cfh.  I'm not exactly sure what size cup I'm using.Last edited by torQ!; 04-14-2010 at 01:05 AM.
Reply:Without grinding to bright metal before welding, any criticism we can offer is worthless.  You can't make an accurate assessment when mill scale is a major factor.
Reply:You are overheating the weld and basemetal by making a huge slow speed weld.  Try to make a small, narrow stringer bead.
Reply:I was kinda ina hurry to try it out, so I just wire brushed it. Next chance I get I will grind it clean and try again, thanks guys."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Try running a puddle on some chits without welding, just to learn how to run the puddle, then start adding filler.
